Hey there, friends! You might have noticed something’s been a little different on your late-night TV lineup lately. Stephen Colbert, the charismatic host of The Late Show, has been noticeably absent for the past couple of weeks. But don’t worry—there’s a good reason. Stephen’s been taking some much-needed time off to recover from surgery, and he recently gave us an update on his health journey. Let’s dive into what’s been happening and when we can expect him back on our screens.
What’s Keeping Stephen Away From The Late Show?
Let’s rewind to late November. That’s when Stephen stepped away from the spotlight to focus on his health. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert went on hiatus after Stephen revealed he was dealing with a pretty serious medical situation. In a candid message on Threads (yes, that’s the platform where everyone’s hanging out these days), Stephen broke the news: “Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week,” he wrote on November 27. “I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix.”
Now, if you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking, “Wait, Stephen’s appendix burst? That sounds intense!” And you’re right—it is intense. But Stephen’s keeping his trademark humor alive, even in the face of a medical challenge. In his message, he went on to say, “I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.” Classic Stephen—always finding a way to make us smile, even when he’s not feeling his best.

Who Was Set to Appear on The Late Show?
As you can imagine, Stephen’s absence left a big void in the late-night lineup. His scheduled interviews for the week included some seriously big names: Barbra Streisand, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Garner, Baz Luhrmann, and Kelsey Grammer. Fans were eagerly anticipating these appearances, but unfortunately, the show had to be postponed.
And it didn’t stop there. The following week, Stephen announced that he was postponing filming once again to focus on his recovery. Some of the incredible guests who were lined up for that week included Mark Ruffalo, Nicki Minaj, Sara Bareilles, and Sarah Paulson. As of now, there’s no word on whether these guests will reschedule their appearances, but fingers crossed!
Stephen shared another heartfelt update on Threads on December 3: “I’m listening to my doctors and continuing to rest and heal,” he wrote. “Thank you for all your well wishes and I’ll see you soon.” It’s clear that Stephen’s prioritizing his health, and we couldn’t be more supportive of that.

When Can We Expect Stephen Back on The Late Show?
While Stephen hasn’t officially announced a return date, fans can expect repeats of The Late Show to fill the gap while he recovers. Stephen’s clearly taking the necessary time to heal, and we’re all rooting for him. During this break, Stephen’s also stepped away from posting on his Instagram account, with his last post being on November 20.
Stephen’s wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, and their children, Madeline, Peter, and John, have been by his side throughout this health journey. For Stephen, family has always been a top priority. Back in 2014, he shared some heartfelt thoughts on parenthood with BuzzFeed: “No one tells you anything about being a parent,” he said. “Here’s the thing, no matter what they tell you, they aren’t telling you anything, because you just can’t explain it, you know? You just can’t explain what it’s like to be a parent until you are a parent.”
He continued, “It’s like, poetry might get at it, but it’s such an experience, not an idea, that trying to explain it… There’s no explaining it.” Stephen went on to add, “I didn’t know what to expect. But I think the most surprising thing is that, while it’s hard—yes, it’s hard—but even the hard parts are just beautiful. Because they’re hard, sometimes.”
