For those who might not know, Mayim was brought on as a co-host in 2021 alongside Jeopardy! legend Ken Jennings after the passing of the show’s beloved host, Alex Trebek. The two split hosting duties throughout 2022 and 2023, creating a unique dynamic that fans grew to love. But things took a turn in May 2023 when Mayim walked off the set during the final week of taping for Season 39. Why? Solidarity with the Writers Guild of America, who were in the midst of a major strike. Ken stepped in to finish out the season, even though he wasn’t originally scheduled to appear in those episodes.
A source close to the situation told Closer in September 2023, “They’re not just going to throw money at him. Ken still has a lot to prove, although he may not think so. Back in 2004, he burst onto the scene as a contestant, racking up an impressive 74-game winning streak and earning over $2.5 million. Over the years, he’s been invited back for various spin-offs, and when Alex Trebek passed away, Ken was thrilled to take on hosting duties, though he admitted it wasn’t always easy.
“It’s a very hard job, and Alex made it look easy,” Ken told The New Yorker in June 2023. “So, it’s kind of a no-win thing — the only other person we’ve seen do it looked incredibly confident and graceful for 37 years, and we all loved him.”
