Meet the power couple who can practically dance circles around anyone, but when they're off the dance floor, Maks Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd are just like you and me. Sure, they're in amazing shape and have mastered the art of ballroom dancing, but they still have those everyday moments that make them relatable. Take, for instance, their disagreements over what to watch on TV. Peta's hooked on Vanderpump Rules, while Maks is all about Frank Sinatra. And like any couple, they're deeply invested in raising their kids, Shai, 6, and baby Rio, who's just 4 months old. Date nights? Oh, they love those too. Maks reveals, "Taverna Tony in Malibu is our go-to spot," adding with a grin, "Peta orders the same Greek salad every time. It’s just that good!"
From Dance Floor Stars to Family Life Icons
Thanks to their incredible runs on Dancing With the Stars, Maks, now 43, and Peta, 37, have carved out a special place in America's heart. While Maks stepped away from the show in 2018, Peta's back this season, dazzling audiences with her moves alongside Brady Bunch legend Barry Williams. But it's not all about the spotlight. The couple's also been busy collaborating with Hallmark and Venmo to launch their innovative gift cards, blending tradition with modern convenience.
Growing the Family: From One Child to Two
With baby Rio joining the family in June, has it been a challenge going from one child to two?

Peta: Absolutely, it’s been a whirlwind. The hardest part is finding the time to balance everything—giving attention to both kids, keeping up with my husband, Maks, and even taking care of our dog. At first, it felt overwhelming, but you adapt. You create routines, you organize, and before you know it, you’re making it work. It’s all about figuring it out as you go along.
How has big brother Shai adjusted to having a little sibling?
Peta: Shai’s over the moon! He can’t wait for Rio to grow up, start talking, and playing together. It’s heartwarming to see how excited he is about being an older brother.
Maks: It reminds me of my own relationship with my brother, Val. Shai and Rio have the same age gap as Val and I, so there’s a natural bond forming. It’s something we’re nurturing, ensuring they follow in our footsteps and develop a close, loving relationship.
Family Ties and Future Plans
Val and Jenna Johnson welcomed their son Rome earlier this year, which means Rio will have a cousin around the same age. How does that feel?
Peta: We’re thrilled! It’s such a blessing that Jenna and Val had their baby just five months before Rio. It’s going to bring our families even closer together.

Do you see more kids in your future?
Maks: Well, let’s just say we’re keeping our options open! (laughs)
Peta: If it happens, it would be incredible to have three. But for now, we’re taking it one day at a time and cherishing every moment with Shai and Rio.
The Secret to a Happy Marriage
What’s the key to keeping your marriage strong after six wonderful years?
Maks: It’s all about having a solid foundation. In a world obsessed with glitz and glamour, we focus on the basics. Too often, people jump ship at the first sign of trouble, but we believe in sticking together. We’ve got that spark, that love, and we don’t want to be apart. Whenever one of us has to travel, there are always tears—it’s a testament to how much we mean to each other.
Do you manage to fit in date nights despite your busy schedules?
Peta: Right now, it’s tough with both of us working full-time, but as the season wraps up, we’ll definitely carve out more time. Date nights are crucial—they keep the romance alive. Whether it’s dinner, a movie, or just spending quality time together, it’s essential to prioritize each other.
Peta’s DWTS Journey with Barry Williams
How’s it been dancing with Barry Williams this season?
Peta: Barry’s been a dream to work with. He’s fully committed, clearing his schedule entirely for Dancing With the Stars. He’s such a kind, generous person, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have him as my partner.
You’ve been doing exceptionally well together!
Peta: Barry’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever encountered. Our rehearsals start around 1 p.m. and go until 5, but before that, he’s already in the gym, stretching, practicing his moves. He’s turning 69 this year, yet he’s in incredible shape and gives his all. It’s inspiring to see his dedication.
Advice and Collaboration
Peta, did you grow up watching The Brady Bunch?
Peta: Absolutely! Even though I wasn’t around when it originally aired, I watched it growing up in Australia. It was a beloved show there.
Maks, do you ever offer Peta advice on her routines?
Maks: I try not to interfere too much. But if she needs help, I’m not going to be selfish and say no. If she asks for input on a cha-cha, I’ll gladly share my thoughts.
Peta: Honestly, I think it’s better if I don’t overload him with details. We’ve developed a system where I choreograph with another pro-dancer who isn’t on the show. Then, we adapt that choreography for our celebrities. It’s a process that works well for us.
Maks: It’s personal, and if you’re spending all your time with the celebrity, it makes sense for you to handle the choreography. You’re the one who has to explain everything.
Hallmark and Venmo: A Partnership That Makes Gifting Easier
Tell us about your exciting partnership with Hallmark and Venmo.
This collaboration is groundbreaking—it combines the charm of a Hallmark card with the convenience of a Venmo gift. It’s perfect for those moments when you’re running late for a birthday party and need a quick, thoughtful present. Now, you can send a beautiful card with a cash gift in just a few clicks.
Maks: I’ve always loved Hallmark because they make it easier for guys like me to pick out cards. Adding the Venmo feature is pure genius. Why didn’t I think of it first?
Mottoes That Keep Them Grounded
Do you have any life mottoes you live by?
Maks: Keep it simple—don’t be an ass!
Peta: That’s so Maks! He’s always been about keeping things real.
Maks: It’s a great motto, trust me!
Peta: For me, especially on the show, it’s all about having fun. If you’re not enjoying yourself, your relationship with your partner won’t resonate with the audience. Fun is key to building a successful partnership.
