Christopher Reeve's name is synonymous with heroism, both on and off the screen. But beyond his iconic role as Superman, he was also an incredible father to his three children: Matthew Reeve, Alexandra Reeve Givens, and Will Reeve. These remarkable kids came together in a rare public appearance at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21 to honor their dad's legacy.
A Glimpse Into Christopher Reeve's Life
The trio attended the premiere of Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a documentary that tells the story of Christopher's life before and after the life-altering horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, this film dives deep into the life of the legendary actor and activist, exploring not only his career but also the profound impact he had on his family and the world. It's a celebration of a man who refused to let adversity define him, and how his children continue to carry his torch.
Christopher Reeve's Family: A Legacy of Love
Christopher's journey as a father began with Matthew, now 44, and Alexandra, 40, whom he had with his former partner, Gae Exton. Later, in 1992, he married Dana Reeve, and they welcomed their son, Will, who is now 31. Each of these children has their own unique memories of their father, but they all share a deep sense of pride in the man he was and the values he instilled in them.

A Moment That Defined a Hero
One of the most poignant moments in Christopher's post-accident life came when he returned to the Academy Awards for the first time since his injury. The audience erupted in a standing ovation, a gesture that moved his family deeply. Matthew, who was in London at the time, recalls staying up late into the night to watch the broadcast. He describes it as an unforgettable experience, one that highlighted his father's ability to inspire and educate through cinema.
Matthew shared with People, "I remember it vividly. We were up until the early hours of the morning, glued to the screen. The warmth and respect the audience showed Dad was incredible. But what struck me most was his speech afterward. He spoke about how films should not only entertain but also inform and educate. It was a message that resonated with me deeply and continues to guide me in my own work."

For Matthew, the memory of that night remains etched in his mind. "That moment has always stayed with me," he reflected. "It's why I feel so at home here at Sundance. This festival embodies what Dad believed in—films that not only entertain but also educate and inspire."
Honoring Dana Reeve: A Legacy of Strength
Christopher's wife, Dana Reeve, passed away at 44 from lung cancer, just 17 months after her husband's death in 2004. For Will, the loss of both parents has been deeply felt, but he finds comfort in the lessons they taught him.
As a correspondent for Good Morning America, Will spoke candidly about how his parents continue to influence his life. "I feel their presence every single day," he told Closer in November 2019. "Losing someone you love means you carry them with you in countless ways. It's in the choices I make, the person I strive to be. Watching a Rangers game reminds me of Dad—he loved the New York Rangers. And when the Yankees lost the playoffs, I thought of him because he was such a huge fan."
