Ginger Zee Brings the Glam with a Fun Twist
Who doesn’t love a little extra sparkle in the morning? Ginger Zee, everyone’s favorite weather expert, did just that by stepping into the role of Weird Barbie for a playful segment on Good Morning America (GMA). This fun moment aired on Monday, March 11, just after the 96th Academy Awards. If you were tuning in, you couldn’t help but smile at her quirky take on one of 2024’s biggest pop culture moments.
Ginger, who’s 43 and still rocking it like a champ, gave fans a behind-the-scenes peek at her transformation into Weird Barbie. In a series of photos shared from the morning broadcast, we got to see how much effort went into bringing this iconic character to life. Talk about dedication!
Ginger didn’t just stop at the visuals. She also posted a teaser on X (formerly Twitter) the night before the Oscars. Her caption was pure gold: “I was born to play weird Barbie… tune into our @gma Oscars afterparty tomorrow morning to see my try to take Kate McKinnon’s job #weirdbarbie.” If that’s not an invitation to watch, I don’t know what is!

GMA Goes Full Barbie Mode
The post-Oscars episode wasn’t just about Ginger shining as Weird Barbie. The entire GMA team got into the spirit, turning the show into a full-on Barbie experience. It all started with a hilarious montage where the hosts recreated iconic scenes from the hit movie Barbie. Robin Roberts, always ready for a challenge, hopped into a pink convertible, just like the one from the film. Meanwhile, Lara Spencer rolled in as Inline Skating Barbie, proving she’s got the moves. And let’s not forget Sam Champion, who dressed as Alan, the 1964 Barbie character who happens to be Ken’s best friend. Talk about staying true to the source material!
But the fun didn’t end there. After the skit, the magic continued as viewers were transported to the GMA studio. Roller skaters dressed in pink jumpsuits greeted the cohosts as they made their way to the stage. Ginger, ever the professional, switched back to her regular clothes for the live show, opting for a stunning one-shoulder gold top and black pants. While she may have left the Weird Barbie costume behind, her energy stayed front and center throughout the episode.
Kate McKinnon’s Legacy Lives On
Of course, we can’t talk about Weird Barbie without mentioning the woman who originated the role, Kate McKinnon. In director Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie, Kate brought Weird Barbie to life with her signature flair. Weird Barbie, as described by Mattel, is “a doll that’s been played with just a little too much.” It’s that imperfect charm that made her such a memorable character. The film itself even earned an Oscar for Best Original Song, thanks to Billie Eilish and Finneas’ powerful track, “What Was I Made For?”

Ginger took things a step further by creating a montage of clips featuring her in the Weird Barbie costume. The video featured the Oscar-winning song playing in the background, adding an extra layer of fun. Fans were quick to comment, especially curious about what her husband, Ben Aaron, thought of the getup. One particularly playful commenter joked, “What did your husband say….?….Is he still alive.” Ginger, always game, responded with a laugh, “Alive and well thanks for asking — we were at a family wedding this weekend.”
Earlier in March, Ginger had stepped away from GMA for a bit to work on a secret project. During her absence, Sam Champion stepped up to fill her shoes, proving he’s got the weather chops too. On March 1, Ginger teased her return on X, sharing, “Earth month coming up so I’ve got some huge stories to bring you soon.” Looks like we can expect more exciting things from her in the coming weeks!
