When you think of Savannah Guthrie, the polished, professional anchor of NBC's Today show probably comes to mind. But it turns out, her journey to becoming the star we all know and love wasn’t always so buttoned-up. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Savannah shared some surprising details about her rebellious teenage years that might shock even her biggest fans.
During her high school days, Savannah admitted to being the exact opposite of the motivated, career-driven woman she is today. "I was kind of a loser, under motivated, I’m serious!" she confessed, laughing at the memory. "I ditched a lot of class. Some days I was goth when I borrowed my sister’s clothes, and other days I was just really into wearing boxer shorts. I was all over the place!"
That's right—before she was making headlines and breaking news, Savannah was cutting class and lighting up cigarettes with her friends. "I would ditch class all the time to go smoke cigarettes at Carl’s Jr. It was the '80s," she revealed while attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner alongside her husband, Mike Feldman. "We were doing what kids did back then, but looking back, I can't believe how wild I was!"

Savannah’s High School Days: Not Just Her Story
Of course, Savannah wasn’t the only one reminiscing about their high school antics. Her NBC colleagues also chimed in to share their own stories. Lester Holt, the news anchor known for his calm and composed demeanor, admitted he was "a band kid," much to everyone's amusement. Al Roker, the beloved weatherman, playfully one-upped Lester by joking, "I’ll see your band kid and raise you the AV squad!"
From Rebellious Teen to Today Show Co-Host
It’s clear that Savannah’s life has taken a dramatic turn since those high school days. After graduating from Dartmouth College, she went on to earn her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. However, instead of pursuing a traditional legal career, she found her calling in journalism. In 2007, she joined NBC News as a correspondent and quickly proved herself as both a legal analyst and White House correspondent.
In 2011, Savannah made the leap to co-host of the Today show, alongside Hoda Kotb. Together, they became the first all-female coanchoring team in the show's history in 2018, following Matt Lauer's departure. Off-screen, Savannah has enjoyed a fulfilling personal life with her husband, Mike Feldman, and their children, Vale and Charles. The family often shares heartwarming moments on social media, giving fans a glimpse into their happy home life.

Writing From the Heart: Savannah’s Latest Book
In February, Savannah released her deeply personal book, Mostly What God Does, which quickly became a bestseller. The book delves into her faith journey, exploring themes of belief, doubt, joy, and sorrow. "All of what I have come to realize is that all of that is my faith story: belief and doubt, you know, joy, and also disappointment and sorrow," she explained. "It’s all part of my faith journey. It’s all enhanced what I believe and have come to understand about God." Her candid reflections have resonated with readers across the country, proving once again that Savannah’s story is far from over.
