For former Today anchor Kristen Welker, becoming a parent was nothing short of a dream come true. This journey has been nothing but magical for Kristen, who shares her life with her husband, John Hughes. After being named an anchor on Weekend Today in January 2020, Kristen found herself in the spotlight not just for her professional achievements but also for her personal journey. She opened up to fans about the challenges she faced with infertility, which resonated with many. Kristen, who married John Hughes in 2017, underwent numerous rounds of IVF before learning she wouldn't be able to carry a child herself. Despite this setback, Kristen and John's determination to build their family never wavered.
In a candid interview with People in September 2021, Kristen recounted her emotional journey: “I consulted with four different doctors. The lowest moment was when that fourth doctor called me and said, ‘We’ve run all the tests. We’ve looked at everything. We just don’t think that you are going to be able to carry a child.’ I thought, ‘How is this ever going to happen?’”

Despite the heartbreak, Kristen and John remained hopeful. In 2019, they connected with a surrogate, and by April 2021, they were thrilled to announce they were expecting a baby girl. With her doctor's encouragement, Kristen decided to play an active role in her daughter's birth, even catching her as she entered the world.
Kristen shared her unforgettable experience with Hoda Kotb in an October 2021 interview: “As she was being born, I stretched my hands out... and in that moment, Hoda, all of that self-doubt went away. All I felt was this bond, this overwhelming sense of love and connection that I’d never felt for another human being before.”
Since becoming a mom, Kristen has cherished every moment with Margot, sharing milestones and memories through photos. In June 2022, the proud parents celebrated Margot's first birthday with a heartfelt Instagram post: “Happy 1st Birthday, Margot Lane! Celebrating you this weekend has been the greatest joy. You amaze me every day. Your dada and I couldn’t love you more.”
Kristen Welker and John Hughes: Expecting Baby Number Two
In May 2024, Kristen and John made the exciting announcement on Today that they’re expecting their second child. “This is an extraordinary moment — there’s no doubt about that,” Kristen told People. “Margot has been telling her classmates that Mama and Dada are getting her a baby brother for her birthday.”
Kristen added, “She’s very proud of the fact that her baby brother will be sleeping in her old crib, and she’s even come up with a name for him: ‘Lolo.’” They revealed the news to Margot during the holidays using a special book. “It took a couple of weeks to get through the book, but now she’s so excited. She’ll say things like, ‘Baby brother coming tonight?’” Kristen shared, radiating excitement for the future.
