Joy Behar Opens Up About Her Bold Personality and Italy Vacation

Joy Behar’s Bold Persona: A Family Legacy

In a recent episode of the “Behind the Table” podcast, The View co-host Joy Behar revealed that her no-holds-barred personality is not just a career choice but a family trait passed down through generations. Joy, now 81, shared this insight with the show’s executive producer, Brian Teta, during a candid chat. It’s not just about being blunt—it’s about being unapologetically honest, something she inherited from her relatives.

Brian, who’s known Joy for years, began the conversation by acknowledging her reputation for speaking her mind. “You’re famously blunt,” he noted, to which Joy playfully countered, “I would say tactless is better than blunt.” This quip had both of them laughing, and it set the tone for the rest of their conversation. Joy went on to explain how her aunt Rose was just as outspoken, sharing a family motto: “As my aunt would say, ‘I tell the truth no matter who I may offend.’”

Knowing When to Hold Back

Despite her reputation for saying what she thinks, Joy admitted that there are limits to her candor. “But no, I do have my limits on what I will say to people,” she explained. “I keep my mouth shut when I have to. It’s amazing how much I get away with. Why is that?” It’s a question that both amused and intrigued her audience, as she reflected on the balance between honesty and discretion.

Brian offered his take on why Joy’s outspoken nature works for her. “You’ve got the history, and you’ve got a persona that your colleagues have gotten used to over your years on the show,” he said. Drawing a comparison to the legendary comedian Don Rickles, who was known for his sharp wit and comedic insults, Brian added, “You’re very much like Don Rickles at this point.”

Don Rickles, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 90, was famous for his ability to dish out insults in a way that made people laugh rather than feel offended. Joy reflected on this comparison, noting, “Who would ever take him seriously? People don’t ever take me seriously when I say something that they think is offensive.” It’s a testament to her skill as a comedian and her ability to tread the line between truth and humor.

From Stand-Up Comedy to The View

Joy’s journey to becoming a co-host on The View in 1997 began with her career in stand-up comedy. Her early years in comedy honed her ability to be direct and unapologetic, qualities that have become her trademark on the daytime talk show. Her experience as a comedian has shaped her approach to discussions on The View, allowing her to tackle tough topics with humor and honesty.

Italy: A Less Than Ideal Vacation

Joy also opened up about her recent trip to Italy, which turned out to be less than ideal due to the weather. “The trip was a semi-disappointment because the weather was so bad,” she said. “I was freezing in Verona. Freezing in Bologna.” While the scenic beauty of Italy is usually a draw for tourists, the cold weather dampened her spirits and affected her overall experience.

Interestingly, during her time in Europe, Joy didn’t experience a single fan interaction. “Nobody recognized me in Italy,” she recalled with a laugh. “The only thing that came close was in Venice, where two women, I overheard them say, ‘Is that her?’ and the other said, ‘No, I don’t think so.’” Joy added, “That was the closest we came. There were Americans everywhere, but no one recognized me.”

It’s a testament to her grounded nature that Joy can laugh about such moments, even if they might sting a little. After all, being recognized is often part of the package when you’re a well-known public figure. But for Joy, it seems that her ability to blend in and enjoy a break from the spotlight was just as rewarding.
