Alright, let’s dive into this. HGTV’s beloved Karen E. Laine, one-half of the dynamic duo from Good Bones, has been taking on her grandma duties in full force. Recently, she shared a heartwarming moment with her fans, letting them know she took one of her grandkids to their final soccer game of the season on Thursday, October 5. And yes, this all happens against the backdrop of a public rift with her daughter, Mina Starsiak Hawk.
Now, Karen isn’t just posting cute photos for the sake of it—she’s got a deeper message here. In her Instagram post, she wrote, “I had the honor of driving a grandchild to his last soccer game of the season.” She added a thoughtful note about respecting her grandchild’s privacy. “And, when he is an adult, he will get to decide what pictures of him will be posted publicly. Until then, it’s me, the dog, and blurry people in the background.” That’s Karen being Karen—candid, caring, and protective of her family’s boundaries.
Grandma Karen Has Quite the Brood
It’s worth noting that Karen didn’t specify which grandchild she was referring to in her post. That’s because she’s a grandma to more than one little one! Besides Mina, Karen also has children named Kelsy, William, CR, and maintains a close relationship with her stepson, Tad. So, this soccer game moment could have involved any number of her grandchildren. What’s clear is that Karen is stepping into her role as grandma with grace and love, despite the ongoing family drama.

Family Tensions Continue
Now, here’s the elephant in the room—Karen hasn’t publicly addressed the rift with her daughter, Mina. Back on August 28, during an episode of her “Mina AF” podcast, Mina opened up about their strained relationship, revealing they weren’t in a “great place.” At the time, Mina was grappling with whether or not to invite her mom to her son Jack’s 5th birthday party. “Will they even notice who’s here and who’s not here? There’s going to be a bunch of animals. That’s all they care about,” Mina reflected, referencing the jungle-themed party.
She went on to say, “Having to say, ‘This is why you’re not invited’ opens up a line of communication to discuss that, and I really don’t want to do that. That sounds exhausting right now. So again, I fall back to ‘Do I just invite everyone because it’s the path of least resistance?’ But it’s what we’ve all always done and it hasn’t gotten us anywhere better.” Ultimately, Mina decided not to invite Karen to the party.
More Drama Unfolds
Just a few weeks later, when Mina’s daughter Charlotte turned 3, Karen didn’t reach out to wish her a happy birthday. In a candid moment on her podcast, Mina shared her feelings about the situation. “Charlie’s birthday was this past weekend, and my mom didn’t call or text or give her a card or drop a present on the door, and I know she feels like she has very valid reasons for not working on developing relationships with my kids,” Mina tearfully explained to her listeners. “But I just can’t understand that.”
