Have you ever wondered how the Today show cast manages to look so effortlessly polished every morning? Sure, they're pros at their jobs, but there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes. Craig Melvin Goes Behind the Scenes on 'Watch What Happens Live'

On June 19, Craig Melvin, the charismatic 45-year-old Today show correspondent, sat down with Andy Cohen for a lighthearted yet revealing segment on Watch What Happens Live. The late-night talk show has a way of bringing out the best in guests, and Craig was no exception. Andy, known for his quick wit and sharp questions, introduced a game where Craig had to guess which of his Today show co-stars best fit certain descriptions. "This is really intense," Craig joked as he prepared to answer Andy's first question.

Who Takes the Longest to Get Ready?

Andy wasted no time diving into the juicy questions. "Who takes the longest in hair and makeup?" he asked Craig. "Oh, come on, Andy," Craig laughed before pausing dramatically. "Um, the longest… Roker," he finally declared. Yes, that's right—Al Roker, the beloved weatherman, reportedly spends the most time getting ready for the show. It's a surprising revelation, but it just adds to the charm of the Today show's backstage antics.

It wasn't just about hair and makeup, though. Andy had more questions for Craig. "Who goes off the cuff the most?" he asked. Once again, Craig didn't hesitate. "Roker," he replied confidently. Fans of the show know that Al Roker has a knack for stealing the spotlight with his quick wit and spontaneous comments. One memorable moment came during a segment on March 27 when Al, 69, walked across the set to share his opinion on Krispy Kreme doughnuts. When Hoda Kotb, 59, announced that McDonald's would soon be selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Al couldn't resist chiming in. "You know what they need to do?" he said as he strolled over to the news desk. "They need to make a Krispy Kreme McMuffin." It was classic Al, proving that he's always ready to add a touch of humor to the show.

Andy also quizzed Craig about the infamous Halloween costumes the Today show cast dons each year. When asked about his least favorite costume, Craig didn't hesitate to point the finger at Al Roker's Charlie Brown outfit. "It was terrible. It was the worst year ever," Andy chimed in, agreeing wholeheartedly. "It’s the year that shall not be named." Despite the bad memories, Craig admitted that the costume still comes up in conversations. "We still talk about it," he said, to which Andy added, "So do we here." On a more positive note, Craig revealed that his favorite Halloween costume was the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air look he sported in the past.

    A Bond Beyond the Screen

While Craig's comments on Watch What Happens Live were all in good fun, he holds a deep respect and admiration for Al Roker. In an interview with TODAY.com in June 2023, Craig opened up about their friendship. "You get to watch him in action, like sometimes in commercial breaks between segments, he’s texting with one of his three kids or he’s putting out a fire," Craig said. "He’s parenting on the job." As a father to two children, Delano and Sybil, with his wife Lindsay Czarniak, Craig relates to Al's balancing act. Al, a proud dad to Courtney, Leila, and Nicholas, is also a grandfather to Courtney's daughter, Sky. "He tells these stories pretty much every day at work and, invariably, he always ends with 'Oh, you will see one day. It’s coming for you,'" Craig shared.
