Hey there, friends. Let's talk about Anne Hathaway. You know her, right? The incredible actress behind The Devil Wears Prada, Les Misérables, and so much more. Well, she recently opened up about an important milestone in her life—five years of sobriety. And trust me, it’s a story worth hearing.
Five Years Sober: Anne Hathaway Reflects on Her Journey
Here’s the thing: Anne Hathaway isn’t one to brag, but she recently shared something deeply personal with The New York Times. In a candid interview on April 27, she revealed that she’s been sober for over five years. Now, that’s a big deal. “There are so many other things I identify as milestones,” Anne said. “I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober. That feels like a milestone to me. Turning 40 feels like a gift. Honestly, I hesitate at calling this stage of life ‘middle age.’ Why? Because life is unpredictable. Anything can happen—heck, I could get hit by a car later today. We don’t know if this is middle age. We don’t know anything for sure.”
Life as a Mom and the Shift in Perspective
At 41, Anne is not just a Hollywood star; she’s also a mom to two beautiful kids, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman and Jack Shulman, whom she shares with her husband, Adam Shulman. Parenthood has brought a new perspective to her life, and she’s been reflecting on how much her mindset has changed over the years. “You know, back when I was a chronically stressed young woman, I remember thinking one day: ‘You’re taking this for granted. You’re taking your life for granted. You have no idea. Something could fall through the sky, and that would be it—lights out,’” Anne recalled. “So, whenever those old instincts creep back up, I just remind myself: ‘You are not going to die stressed.’”

Her First Public Acknowledgment of Sobriety
For those who may not know, Anne first talked about her sobriety back in January 2019 during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. At the time, she explained her reasons for quitting alcohol. “I quit drinking back in October, for 18 years,” she said. “I decided to stop drinking while my son was in my house because, honestly, I didn’t love the way it affected me. And let’s be real, he’s at an age where he really needs me all the time, especially in the mornings.”

Anne has no regrets about her decision to live sober. In fact, she’s found it to be incredibly liberating. The mom of two explained how cutting alcohol out of her life has brought her immense benefits. “This is the first time I’ve known myself this well,” she told Vanity Fair in a March 25 interview. “I no longer live in the shadow of what others think of me. I know my own mind, and I’m deeply connected to my own feelings. And you know what? I laugh a lot quicker now.”
A New Approach to Life
Anne attributes much of her personal growth to the lifestyle choices she’s made in support of her mental health. “I stopped doing things that I know drain me or lead me down spirals,” she said. “And it’s not just about alcohol. Honestly, I don’t even engage with myself online. It’s all about creating a life that nurtures who I am and what I need.”
