Let’s talk about the cutest little guy in Jenna Bush Hager’s life: her 4-year-old son, Hal. Believe it or not, this adorable tyke has already experienced his first heartbreak—or at least that’s what Jenna revealed during an episode of Today on July 23. Yes, you read that right. It all started when Jenna and her kids became fans of country star Lainey Wilson. The family was thrilled when Lainey performed on Today last month, and Hal, along with his sisters Mila, 11, and Poppy, 8, couldn’t wait to watch her sing. After the performance, Jenna, 42, and her family got the chance to meet Lainey, 32, and even snap some photos with her. “I introduced my kids to her,” Jenna told cohost Hoda Kotb during the July 23 episode of Today. As Jenna recounted, Hal leaned over to his sister Mila and whispered something that made everyone laugh. “He said, ‘She asked me to be her boyfriend—and now I’m her boyfriend,’” Jenna shared with a chuckle. Turns out, Hal didn’t just stop at claiming Lainey as his girlfriend. Jenna revealed that her little boy also claimed they broke up. “I heard him say the other day, ‘Well, I called and broke up with her,’” Jenna said, laughing. “So Lainey, you have an admirer named Hal Hager, who created a whole story about how y’all once dated.” Talk about a creative kid!

But What About Lainey’s Real Love Life?

Of course, Lainey is happily taken by Devlin Hodges, a man she’s been dating since 2021. The couple went public with their relationship in the summer of 2023, and it sounds like things are going great. During an episode of The Bobby Bones Show in June 2023, Lainey opened up about her romance. “He’s been around for a while. I just decided to make him wait for two and a half years,” she joked. “He knows what it’s like chasing a dream because he’s done that for himself. He was in the NFL. He tried out literally for the Steelers and made it and had a really great run with them. Then he went out to the L.A. Rams and did that too.”

But beyond his football career, Devlin is a true supporter of Lainey’s music journey. “But I’ll tell you, he is good as gold. Supports me, would never come in between anything that I’m trying to do. He’s like, ‘Go get it, girl.’ And I made him wait for a while. I mean … it’s been a little over two years now,” Lainey shared. Clearly, Hal’s little crush isn’t going to get in the way of this real-life love story!

Jenna Shares Another Milestone in Hal’s Life

While Jenna found her son’s crush on Lainey absolutely hilarious, she also recently shared another major milestone in Hal’s life. Back in January, Jenna revealed that Hal finally moved out of his crib and into a big-boy bed. It’s a moment every parent can relate to, and Jenna’s story made it sound both sweet and funny.

“Sweet Hal. Hal’s been in a crib since birth until about a week ago,” Hoda, 59, told Today viewers at the time. Jenna explained that she was quarantined due to having COVID, so she wasn’t involved in the decision. “I was pushed away into my room watching all that was on television,” she said.

It turns out, the move was all Hal’s idea. “So Henry heard him say, ‘Daddy! Daddy!’ And then he went in and he said, ‘I’m ready.’ And Henry said, ‘You’re ready for what?’ And he said, ‘I need to move into my big boy bed,’” Jenna shared. “It’s been in the room for about two years. And there he is. But it all happened without his mother’s help. And leaves me to wonder if I’m too overbearing when it comes just to him — the others.”
