It seemed like the final curtain had fallen on Good Bones, but hold onto your hats—Mina Starsiak Hawk and her mom, Karen E. Laine, are back for a limited season! Fans were left stunned when HGTV dropped the bombshell announcement on Wednesday, July 17. This unexpected return is set to bring a fresh wave of excitement to the screen, with a whole new chapter for the beloved duo.
A New Beginning for the Good Bones Team
According to HGTV, this latest season of Good Bones will dive deep into the evolving lives of Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E. Laine as they venture beyond their Indianapolis renovation days. "The season will focus on Mina as she takes on a very dated but totally groovy lake house just north of Indy," the official synopsis reveals. "Her plan? To give it a much-needed facelift, transforming it into a serene family retreat that everyone can enjoy. Meanwhile, Karen sets off for Wilmington, North Carolina, where she'll take a big risk by investing her retirement savings in a bungalow that needs more work than she anticipated. This new chapter will unfold over a three-week limited run, promising plenty of drama and delightful surprises."
What Happened After Good Bones Initially Ended?
For those who may have missed it, Good Bones wrapped up its original run on HGTV back in October 2023 after eight seasons, amid some behind-the-scenes drama. Mina, now 39, shared during an episode of her podcast, “Mina AF,” that she had secured a spinoff series focusing on the renovations of her new Indianapolis lake house. She mentioned that her husband, Steve Hawk, along with a couple of familiar faces from Good Bones, would be part of the project. Interestingly, she didn't reveal right away that her mom, Karen, would also be featured, working on her own house.

In a candid moment during her October 17, 2023 podcast episode, Mina opened up about the experience. "What I know right now is that we're filming a two-episode spinoff, and it's been an absolute blast so far," she said. "Steve's been heavily involved, the kids are around a lot, and MJ Coyle and Austin Aynes have joined us for demolition. It feels like going back to the roots of why I started, and it's been incredibly fun and joyful."
What to Expect in the New Show
According to the official press release, the premiere episode will be extended to 90 minutes and will delve into Mina's journey through a challenging home-buying process and the renovation of her tranquil lakeside haven. However, along the way, she'll have to make some tough decisions about her future. "The subsequent two hour-long episodes will center around Karen's purchase of a 120-year-old beach bungalow that comes with its fair share of challenges, including unpredictable weather that threatens to derail the entire project midway through construction," the statement detailed.

Both Mina and Karen have been teasing their new properties on their Instagram accounts since wrapping up season 8 of Good Bones. The new show is set to premiere on Wednesday, August 14, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV, so mark your calendars!
The Family Dynamics Behind the Scenes
This announcement came almost a year after Mina candidly admitted to being in a "challenging" place with her mom and her brother Tad Starsiak. In a heartfelt moment on her podcast, she confessed, "We all put on our big kid pants and pretend to be nice... then retreat to our corners and talk trash about each other. My mom and I aren’t in a great place. My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place. My brother William and I have a kind of nonexistent relationship. It’s complicated, but not really complicated. We don’t engage much, and the last time we did, it wasn’t very positive. That was maybe a year ago." Despite the challenges, it seems the family is ready to reunite for this exciting new chapter.
