Let’s talk about Kathy Bates, one of Hollywood’s most beloved actresses. The 76-year-old star recently sat down with People to clear the air about her incredible weight loss journey, which has sparked a lot of buzz. She lost an impressive 100 pounds, and no, it wasn’t just about taking Ozempic.
How Kathy Lost 100 Pounds: A Journey of Hard Work and Dedication
In a candid interview published on October 9, Kathy revealed the truth behind her transformation. She explained that she lost 80 pounds over seven years by making significant changes to her diet and exercising more after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. But here’s the kicker—she also used Ozempic to help shed an additional 20 pounds, bringing her total weight loss to a remarkable 100 pounds.
Kathy emphasized that her journey wasn’t easy. “There’s been a lot of talk that I just was able to do this because of Ozempic,” she said. “But I have to impress upon people out there that this was hard work for me, especially during the pandemic. It’s very hard to say you’ve had enough.”

The Emotional Battle Behind the Weight Loss
For Kathy, the weight loss wasn’t just about numbers on a scale—it was deeply personal. “I ate because I was afraid, and I ate because it was a FU to my self-esteem,” she confessed. Diabetes runs in her family, and she witnessed firsthand the devastating effects it can have. Her father had a leg amputation, and one of her sisters struggles with the condition. “It terrified me. It scared me straight,” she admitted.
Last month, Kathy opened up about how her weight loss has transformed her life. “It’s helped me tremendously that, over the last six or seven years, I’ve lost 100 pounds,” she told Variety. “I don’t think I’ve been this slim since I was in college.”
From Struggling on Set to Feeling Energized
Kathy recalled the challenges she faced while working on “Harry’s Law” in 2011. “I had to sit down every moment that I could,” she revealed. “It was hard for me to walk. I’m ashamed I let myself get so out of shape, but now I have a tremendous amount of energy.”

That same month, an insider spoke to Closer about Kathy’s approach to maintaining her weight loss. “She’s done this the healthy way by limiting the bad carbs, cutting out the bread, cheese, and pasta, eating more veggies and fruit, and controlling her portions,” the source revealed.
At the time, the insider noted that Kathy was “exasperated” by the attention her weight loss was receiving. After all, she’s battled ovarian and breast cancer in the past. “The fact is, she’s a fighter who’s battled other ill health conditions down the years, and there are many in her circle who are rallying around her and encouraging her to stay on the healthy track,” the insider said.
Kathy’s Journey to Healthier Living
Five years ago, Kathy shared her motivation for getting healthier. “Well, I was facing diabetes—it runs in my family—and I really didn’t want to live with that,” the Academy Award winner told Extra in March 2019.

She also shared a valuable lesson she learned from her niece about mindful eating. “After you eat for 20-30 minutes, you experience an involuntary sigh,” she explained. “It’s communication between your stomach and brain telling you you’ve had enough. What I discovered is if you listen to that sigh and push that plate away for just five minutes, you realize you’re satisfied and you don’t have to eat more.”
