Let’s talk about a moment that’s touching hearts across the nation. Kathie Lee Gifford recently opened up about her longtime friend and former cohost Hoda Kotb’s announcement that she’s leaving the beloved Today show. If you’ve followed their journey, you know this duo brought joy, laughter, and a little something extra to our mornings. Now, Hoda is stepping away, and it’s a bittersweet moment for everyone involved.

On X, Kathie Lee, now 71, shared her thoughts with a heartfelt message on September 27. “Bittersweet news as my dear friend @hodakotb steps away from the Today Show,” she wrote. “Her warmth, laughter, and incredible spirit have brightened our mornings and touched countless hearts. Here’s to new adventures!” It’s clear that Kathie Lee understands the weight of such a decision, having made a similar move herself when she left the show back in 2019.

A Legacy of Laughter and Connection

Kathie Lee and Hoda cohosted Today With Kathie Lee & Hoda from 2008 to 2019, creating a bond that went beyond the screen. Their chemistry was undeniable, and their show became a staple in many households. Now, Hoda, 60, is the one saying goodbye as she prepares to focus on her next chapter alongside Jenna Bush Hager. It’s a transition that’s bound to leave a void but also opens doors to exciting possibilities.

  • Hoda first broke the news in a heartfelt letter to staffers on September 26. “As I write this, my heart is all over the map,” she penned. “I know I’m making the right decision, but it’s a painful one. And you all are the reason why. They say two things can be right at the same time, and I’m feeling that so deeply right now. I love you, and it’s time for me to leave the show.” Her words reflect the complexity of such a decision, balancing personal desires with professional commitments.

    Emotional Goodbyes and Understanding

The following morning, Hoda shared the news with Today viewers during an emotional broadcast. As a mother to two young children, Haley and Hope, Hoda expressed her desire to spend more quality time with her family. “Obviously, I had my kiddos late in life, and I was thinking that they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie that I have,” she shared, wiping away tears. “I feel like we only have a finite amount of time. And so, with all that being said, this is the hardest thing in the world.”

    Understanding and Support from Co-Hosts

While it’s hard to see Hoda go, her cohosts fully support her decision. Hoda will make her final appearance on Today in early 2025 but will remain part of the NBC family. Al Roker, who has been by her side for years, expressed his understanding and admiration for Hoda’s choice. “Will I miss her day to day? Sure. But I’m just so thrilled for her that I can’t possibly feel any sadness,” Al told People on September 29.

“Here’s the thing,” the 70-year-old weathercaster added. “I would feel much worse if she was leaving entirely, but she’s just doing something else within our NBC News family.” Al, a father to three children—Courtney, Leila, and Nick—knows firsthand the importance of prioritizing family time. “Look, I’m very fortunate in that I’ve watched my kids grow up, especially when [my daughter] Courtney was younger. I was in local news, so I was home in the morning with my kids. But [Hoda’s] got two young daughters. Those moments, those kids grow up. It’s cliché, but it’s true. It’s like you blink.”

“So I understand exactly why she did it,” Al concluded, showing empathy and respect for Hoda’s decision.

    Fans Send Love and Support

Hoda’s announcement left fans shocked but also filled with admiration for her courage and priorities. Social media lit up with messages of support. One commenter wrote, “Thank you for being the bright spot in our lives! Your love and light are always appreciated.” Another added, “Being a Mom BEST title Ever! It’s the small things hearing them giggle with friends and family. Seeing them experience their little life.”
