Eric Stonestreet’s Heartfelt Reaction to the Spinoff's Demise
Let me tell you something real. Eric Stonestreet recently opened up about the cancellation of his dream project—a Modern Family spinoff featuring his beloved character, Cameron Tucker. In an interview with In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Eric shared how it felt when ABC decided not to move forward with the show. Can you imagine? Fans were eagerly waiting for this spinoff, and now it’s officially off the table.
The Inside Story: Why the Spinoff Never Happened
Eric revealed some pretty interesting details about why the spinoff never saw the light of day. “It’s no longer a possibility,” he said, reflecting on the decision. “They had their chance. Chris Lloyd, one of the brilliant creators of Modern Family, along with some of the writers, crafted an incredible script. It was set in Missouri, where Cam and Mitch were living with their kids, Lily and Rex. But ABC just said, ‘No, we’re not interested.’”
What Happened in the Modern Family Finale?
In the emotional series finale back in April 2020, Eric and his co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson's characters, Cam and Mitch, packed up their lives and moved to Missouri. They wanted a fresh start, with Cam taking on a new role as a college football coach. Fans were excited to see this next chapter unfold, and many hoped the spinoff would pick up right where the finale left off. But alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

How Did Eric Feel About the Decision?
Eric admitted that the decision left him feeling pretty hurt. “It definitely stung, not just for Jesse and me but also for Chris Lloyd, who poured his heart into creating the spinoff,” Eric explained. “I absolutely adore my character, Cameron. I loved working on Modern Family, and I loved working alongside Jesse. We had such amazing chemistry and a fantastic working relationship. I would’ve continued that journey in a heartbeat, and I think everyone else involved would’ve too.”
But Eric went on to share some deeper thoughts. “I think maybe Jesse and I felt like we were seen as the older characters, and perhaps they didn’t think our stories were worth continuing. It was tough to swallow, but at the end of the day, these are business decisions, and we have to respect that.”
Could the Spinoff Have Been Successful?
Eric firmly believes that if the spinoff had been given the green light, it would’ve been a hit. “I think it would’ve been a no-brainer,” he said confidently. “We had one of the creators of Modern Family fully committed to making it work. He had been so dedicated to the original show, ensuring it stayed amazing for all those years. With the right people on board, it would’ve been fantastic. If ABC had said yes, I truly believe we’d still be producing it right now.”
Hope for a Holiday Special?
Despite the disappointment, Eric hinted at the possibility of a Modern Family holiday special in the future. “I don’t know exactly how it would work, considering how much time has passed, but I’d love to see a Christmas special,” Eric shared. “There have been some whispers about it among the writers. It would be so much fun to revisit those characters during the holidays.”
Eric Stonestreet's New Project: Home Team
While the Modern Family spinoff didn’t pan out, Eric is busy with exciting new projects. He’s starring in and executive producing a show called Home Team for Prime Video. In the series, Eric plays Scott Hansen, a man who moves his father into a retirement community. Through this experience, Scott learns to embrace life and live in the moment from people who have fewer moments left. It’s a touching story that dives into family dynamics and personal growth.
So, while Eric may be done with Cameron Tucker for now, he’s bringing his signature charm to a whole new role. Fans of Modern Family should definitely check out Home Team to see Eric’s latest adventure.
