In a heartfelt reflection, Christopher Reeve’s three children recall their father as an open-hearted man who never hesitated to express his thoughts and feelings. Known worldwide for portraying Superman on the big screen, Christopher was much more than just a superhero to his family.
A Hero Beyond the Screen: Christopher Reeve's Journey
Reeve, the iconic Superman actor, faced one of the most challenging moments of his life when he became paralyzed from the neck down after a devastating horseback riding accident in 1995. Now, his story is being told through the eyes of those who knew him best in the new documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. This film dives deep into the highs and lows of his life, capturing the essence of a man who inspired countless individuals with his resilience and determination.
A Family Touched by Tragedy and Triumph
“Our dad had a near-death experience, so he understood the importance of being honest and direct with those he loved,” Alexandra Reeve Givens, Christopher’s daughter, shared with People on September 10. “After the accident, our lives changed drastically. We couldn’t engage in physical activities anymore, so we spent more time sitting around, talking, and connecting. It was a gift we wouldn’t trade for anything.”

Christopher’s legacy extends beyond his acting career. He and his ex-partner Gae Exton welcomed two children, Alexandra and Matthew Reeve, while his son Will was born to his wife Dana Reeve. In the years following his accident, Christopher channeled his energy into creating the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries and enhancing the quality of life for paralyzed individuals and their families.
A Legacy of Love and Inspiration
Christopher passed away on October 10, 2004, at the age of 52, due to heart failure. Tragically, Dana followed in 2006 at the age of 44, losing her battle with lung cancer. Despite these losses, Will carries forward the memories of his parents with pride and admiration.
“Watching Matthew and Alex raise their own families, I see my parents reflected in them in the most beautiful way,” Will, a correspondent for Good Morning America, reflected. “Life is unpredictable, and we never know how much time we have with the ones we love. That’s a lesson I learned early on, and it’s something I’ll carry with me forever.”
Will’s reflections come at a time when he’s set to make a cameo appearance in James Gunn’s upcoming 2025 Superman film, tying his personal journey back to his father’s legacy in a meaningful way.
“I know the team making the film, and they’ve been incredibly supportive of me and my family,” Will told TMZ in July. “When they asked if I’d be interested, I jumped at the chance. It was a quick gig, but honestly, I was more nervous doing that than I am on TV. There were so many people around, and I only had one line to memorize!”
Will remains tight-lipped about the film’s details, adding, “I’m not sure what I’m allowed to share, but it was an unforgettable experience.”

Though Will enjoyed his time on set, he admitted that acting might not be his full-time calling. “I’m happy with my cameo. It’s a quick moment, but it’s special. Blink and you’ll miss it,” he joked.
