Let’s face it—Prince Harry has been a topic of conversation ever since he stepped away from royal duties. Lately, all eyes have been on whether or not the former royal will move back to the U.K. permanently, especially after the royal family’s health crises. In 2024, Harry gave an update on his life in America with his family and shared some thoughts about what the future might hold.
Is Prince Harry Planning a Move Back to the U.K.?
As of now, Harry hasn’t made any official announcements about moving back to the U.K. But speculation has been swirling since early 2024 that he might be considering a big move with his wife, Meghan Markle. The buzz really picked up when insiders started sharing what they claimed were Harry’s private thoughts.
A source told Life & Style in March 2024 that Harry is “planning to move his family back to England.” According to the insider, the author of Spare is reportedly feeling “homesick.” This revelation came as a shock to many, especially to Meghan. “When he told Meghan, she was beyond shocked,” the source revealed. “She can’t believe he’s even considering it!”

But as the year progressed, Harry seemed to contradict these rumors. In December 2024, while attending the New York Times DealBook Summit, Harry confirmed that he and Meghan were happy with their life in America. “I very much enjoy living here and bringing up my kids here,” he said. “It’s a part of my life that I never thought I would experience.”
Harry also mentioned that his late mother, Princess Diana, would have “wanted” this life for him. “Being able to do the things I’m able to do with my kids that I undoubtedly wouldn’t be able to do in the U.K. is huge,” he added. “I’m incredibly grateful for that opportunity.”
When Did Prince Harry First Move to America?
Harry and Meghan’s journey to America began in January 2020 when they announced their decision to step back from royal duties. After a brief stay in Canada, the couple settled into a home in Montecito, California, with their son, Archie. It was a big change for the couple, but one they seemed to embrace fully.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into their family home in July of this year,” a spokesperson for the couple said in a statement to multiple outlets in August 2020. “They have settled into the quiet privacy of their community since their arrival and hope that this will be respected for their neighbors, as well as for their family.”

After moving to the U.S., Harry and Meghan welcomed their second child, Lilibet, in June 2021. Life seemed to settle into a routine for the couple until February 2024, when Harry returned to the U.K. for a brief visit with his father, King Charles III, following the monarch’s cancer diagnosis. The visit was short-lived, lasting less than an hour before Harry hopped back on a plane to return to California.
This quick trip prompted Harry to speak out publicly for the first time about his father’s diagnosis. “I spoke to him. I jumped on a plane and went to see him as soon as I could,” Harry said during a Good Morning America segment in February 2024. “Look, I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him, I’m grateful for that.”

Just one month after Harry’s visit with Charles, Princess Kate Middleton revealed her own cancer diagnosis. Harry and Meghan issued a statement through Us Weekly, expressing their support. “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace,” they said.
In September 2024, Kate announced that she had completed chemotherapy. “Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life,” she said.
