It’s no secret that Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb have a knack for keeping things real. On a recent episode of Today With Hoda & Jenna, the dynamic duo didn’t mince words when it came to their thoughts about the 2025 Golden Globes nominations. Let’s just say, they weren’t exactly thrilled with some of the choices.
Hoda and Jenna Speak Their Minds
“Let me set the stage for this next topic,” Hoda, 60, began, her tone dripping with a mix of frustration and humor. “We’re angry, and it’s all because of what happened with the Golden Globes nominations.” Jenna, 43, chimed in with her signature wit, “Like the jangle has already gone, the jangly is gone!”
Hoda continued, her voice rising with enthusiasm, “The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning, and honestly, there’s a lot to celebrate. But there’s also a big ol’ elephant in the room that we can’t ignore.”

The Golden Globes’ Hits and Misses
“Cynthia Erivo, Wicked, Ariana Grande, Wicked—they’re all nominated for Best Actress, Supporting Actress, and even Best Motion Picture,” Hoda and Jenna said in unison, their excitement palpable. “It’s all fantastic except for one glaring omission that has us scratching our heads.”
Jenna leaned in, her expression serious. “Here’s the deal: Jon Chu, the director of Wicked, didn’t get a nomination. Let that sink in for a moment. The guy who worked his tail off to make that movie a visual masterpiece? Snubbed.”
“OK, sorry, Jon, but we’re not okay with this,” Hoda remarked, shaking her head. “If we could call someone at the Golden Globes right now—and let’s be honest, we don’t know anyone—but if we did, we’d be on the phone telling them exactly what we think!”
A Visual Masterpiece
Hoda described Wicked as a “visual masterpiece,” and Jenna agreed, saying the film reminded her of the golden age of Hollywood. “It’s got all the singing, all the dancing, and all the heart,” Jenna added. “And Jon made it colorful, beautiful, and downright magical.”
Hoda nodded emphatically. “That movie was tricky to pull off, and Jon did it with such grace and talent. He’s the kind of director who can take a challenging project and turn it into something incredible. It’s a shame he didn’t get the recognition he deserves.”
“We need to take whoever made this decision and have them watch Cats over and over again,” Jenna quipped. “That’ll show them how hard it is to direct a masterpiece!”

But despite their disappointment, Hoda and Jenna are holding out hope for Jon. “He’s going to get an Oscar nomination for sure,” Hoda predicted confidently. “It’s a given that the Academy will recognize his incredible work.”
Other Notable Snubs
It wasn’t just Jon who got left out in the cold this year. Denis Villeneuve, the visionary behind Dune: Part Two, also missed out on a nomination. He had previously been recognized for his work on the first part of the franchise in 2022.
Josh Brolin, who starred in Dune: Part Two, was so frustrated by the snub that he vowed to quit acting if Denis, 57, doesn’t get an Oscar nomination. “If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting,” Josh, 56, told Variety on November 21. “It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.”
