Art Garfunkel Jr. Shares What It's Like to Be the Son of a Music Legend

When Art Garfunkel Jr. was around 12 years old, he truly began to grasp just how famous his father, the iconic Art Garfunkel, really was. “We flew to Rome, where my dad, with Simon & Garfunkel, had a concert in front of the Colosseum,” Art Jr. exclusively shares with Closer. “It was an ocean of humanity — 680,000 people came. I said, ‘Dad, does the whole world know you?’ My dad paused, thought about it, and then said, ‘No, but half the world probably does.’”

Fast forward to today, and making music has become a beautiful family affair for Art Sr., now 83, who skyrocketed to fame in the 1960s with legendary hits like “Mrs. Robinson” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” alongside his former schoolmate, Paul Simon. Art’s new album, aptly titled Father and Son, showcases a harmonious collaboration between him and his son, Art Jr., 34. “I love music. I can’t help but sing,” Art Sr. tells Closer. “The best part of this experience is how much it allows us to connect on a deeper level. There are moments where we sing so closely that our foreheads almost touch because we’re working off one mic. It’s pure bliss to be that close to my own son.”

Passing Down Wisdom: Lessons from a Legendary Career

Throughout his illustrious career, Art Sr. has embraced the opportunity to pass down some of the invaluable wisdom he’s accumulated over the decades. “The most important lesson my dad has taught me is that being good at something is one thing, but being great is something entirely different—and much harder,” Art Jr. explains. “The secret to greatness lies in giving that extra 1% beyond what everyone else does.”

  • For Art Sr., blending his two greatest loves—music and family—has proven to be a profoundly meaningful experience. “Sigmund Freud once said that a fulfilling life means finding satisfaction in both your work and your family. If you’re content in these two areas, then you’re living a valid life,” he reflects. “And I can say with certainty that I have that.”
