Instead of a grand party like the one she threw for Ellen’s 60th, this time around, she planned something unique and fun—a private poker coaching session with none other than Vince Van Patten from the World Poker Tour.

Portia shared the moment on Instagram, writing, “Happy Birthday to my wife! I surprised her with a poker coaching session with none other than WPT’s Vince Van Patten! Thanks, Vince!” The video that accompanied the caption showed Ellen diving into the world of poker with Vince. Now, as most of you poker fans know, Vince is a legend for his insightful commentary on the World Poker Tour. Even though he's probably explained the game to hundreds of players, he wasn't prepared for the delightful banter he got from Ellen.
The Poker Lesson Gets Hilarious
As Vince was laying out the basics, he explained, “Usually when a person acts strong, they’re weak and when they act weak, they’re strong. Some players will try to table talk you back into the hand.” But Ellen wasn’t having any of that. With her signature humor, she quipped, “I’m not table talking you, I’m just talking and you’re at a table.” Portia and a few others in the room couldn’t help but laugh at Ellen’s clever response, making the session not just educational but also incredibly entertaining.

The Sweet Side of Ellen and Portia's Relationship
Since tying the knot in 2008, Ellen and Portia have been nothing short of adorably supportive of each other. During an appearance on David Letterman’s Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Ellen opened up about a touching gesture from Portia. Back in 2019, when Ellen was about to go on tour, Portia was initially concerned. “We’ve been together for 15 years, and she had never seen me do stand-up because I hadn’t done it in 15 years,” Ellen explained. “So when I made the deal, she was like, ‘Why are you adding this to your plate? You have so much going on, this is just going to be stressful.’”
But as it turned out, Portia ended up being Ellen’s biggest cheerleader. “But then when she saw me do stand-up, she just loved it and she went to every single performance and gave me notes,” Ellen continued. “It was great because then she’d tell me if I did something one night a little bit better or, if I missed, [she’d say] ‘You forgot to do this!’ She got way into it. She wants me to go on tour.” It’s clear that Portia not only supports Ellen but also finds joy in her success, making their relationship all the more heartwarming.
