Mariska Hargitay, the beloved mom of three, loves nothing more than spending quality time with her family. Whether it's hanging out with her sons, August, 13, and Andrew, 8, or her daughter Amaya, also 8, Mariska cherishes every moment. In a recent interview, the star opened up about her life at home with her husband, Peter Hermann, and shared what it's like balancing family and work.
"Being at home, this is my happy place," Mariska, 56, told People on Friday, March 6. She explained how the simple presence of being home transforms everything around her. "The idea of being home changes everything, and I can see it with my kids, too, that idea of, 'Oh, OK, Mama’s home, everything is fine.' And in this house, it’s happy chaos when everyone is here."

Family Life: The Heart and Soul of Her World
For Mariska, motherhood is more than just a role—it’s a calling. She described it as "the most important thing I’ll ever do." But like many of us, she’s still figuring out how to strike the perfect balance between her demanding career and her family life. As the star of Lake Placid, running a foundation, and raising three kids alongside her husband Peter, she’s got a lot on her plate. "There’s not enough hours in the day," she admitted. "I’m on a TV show, and I have a foundation and three children and a husband, and they all need, as anything that you value does, a lot of focus and energy. Time is my most precious commodity now. I’ve had to think smarter to get more done."
Peace and Joy at Home
Despite the challenges, Mariska finds solace and peace at home. For her, there’s no place like it. "I’ve always wanted this to be the joyful house," she explained. She shared how her family has become her anchor, and she treasures the moments they spend together. Even with her busy schedule, Mariska ensures that family remains her top priority.
Children: The Teachers of Life
Mariska’s children have had a profound impact on her life, making her a better parent and person. In March 2018, she told People that her kids, August, Andrew, and Amaya, have taught her the importance of listening. "They taught me to really listen. My husband is my North Star, and my kids are my teachers," she gushed. She also praised her husband Peter, saying, "Peter and I, we’re so different that it’s been amazing how we complement each other. He knows everything I don’t."

Mariska married Peter in 2004, and their partnership has been nothing short of extraordinary. "The beauty is that families are made in so many different ways, and that was my reality as a child," she reflected. "Growing up, my family was made in such an interesting and unique way, and now I have that with my own family, and so I understand it. It’s been amazing."
