Let’s take a moment to celebrate the incredible Valerie Bertinelli. This beloved star, who first captured America’s heart on the classic sitcom One Day at a Time, is about to hit a major milestone. As she prepares to turn 60 on April 23, Valerie reflects on life, love, and finding joy even in challenging times. She tells us, “Life is all about moving forward, no matter what.”
Turning 60: A Time for Reflection and Renewal
As Valerie lights the candles on her birthday cake, she’s making a heartfelt wish for the next decade to be her happiest yet. But let’s be honest—life hasn’t always been easy for this amazing woman. Over the past few years, Valerie has faced some of the toughest moments anyone could imagine. The loss of her beloved father, Andy, in 2016, followed by the passing of her mother, Nancy, last June, left her feeling emotionally drained and overwhelmed.
“The sadness from her passing, combined with the struggles of the last few years, really took hold of my heart,” Valerie shares. It’s hard to admit these things, but being open and honest is part of what makes her so relatable. For someone who’s battled weight issues her entire life, it’s no surprise that grief led her back to old habits—like emotional eating. “I’ve used food as a way to avoid dealing with sadness or stress,” she admits. “But the truth is, eating those feelings away only makes me feel worse about myself.”

Support System: The Key to Moving Forward
Thankfully, Valerie isn’t facing these challenges alone. She has an incredible support system that includes her husband, Tom Vitale, her son Wolfgang “Wolfie” Van Halen, and her ex-husband, guitarist Eddie Van Halen. “She surrounds herself with people who uplift her and keep her grounded,” says a close friend. “There’s no drama—just love and support.”
Valerie acknowledges that having a strong network of family and friends is crucial. “I don’t want to cope with tough times by turning to food anymore,” she says. “I want to face challenges by leaning on the people I trust and love.”
Healthy Habits: A Path to Happiness
Valerie, the host of Valerie’s Home Cooking and Kids Baking Championship, is making positive changes to improve her well-being. With guidance from her nutritionist, she’s adopting healthier eating habits. “At this stage in life, working with a professional feels like the best approach,” she explains. “But I also remind myself that it’s okay to indulge sometimes—it’s all about balance.”
Exercise has become a key part of her routine, too. Not only does it help burn calories, but it also boosts her mood. “She works out regularly with a trainer at her home gym,” says an insider. “She loves stretching, weight training, and yoga. And nothing beats a long walk with her husband and her dogs, Luna and Kylie.”
Finding Joy Amidst Challenges
Life throws curveballs at all of us—just look at the challenges brought on by the current global pandemic. But Valerie knows that maintaining a positive mindset and healthy habits can make a world of difference. “Finding joy in this world isn’t easy when there’s so much going on,” she reflects. “But we have to figure out how to discover happiness despite the difficulties. Things may go wrong, but we can always find a way to fix them.”
