Closer Weekly

Hey there! If you're a fan of the legendary Brat Pack from the '80s, you're in for a treat. With the new Hulu documentary Brats, streaming starting June 13, we're diving back into the lives of these Hollywood icons. Today, Closer magazine revisits the real-life romances that unfolded behind the cameras. So, let's get cozy and explore some of the most unforgettable love stories from that era.

The Stormy Love Affair of Demi Moore and Emilio Estevez

Let me set the scene for you. It's 1985, and St. Elmo's Fire is lighting up the big screen. Amid the chaos of fame and fortune, Demi Moore meets Brat Pack star Emilio Estevez. Just a year after her divorce, Demi was ready to dive headfirst into a whirlwind romance with the now-62-year-old Emilio. Together, they became part of the wild party scene that defined the Brat Pack era.

Fast forward six months, and the couple was already engaged. But just as things seemed perfect, Demi discovered something shocking. In her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, she revealed the heartbreak that followed. "Emilio and I had just sent out our wedding invitations when a friend told me she'd seen him out with someone else in L.A.," she wrote. To make matters worse, Emilio had gotten an ex-girlfriend pregnant.

  • Feeling utterly devastated, Demi turned to her therapist for advice. Her therapist didn't mince words. "Ordinarily, I prefer for a patient to come to an understanding on her own," Demi remembered being told. "But I don’t have time to let that happen, so I just have to tell you: If you marry him the way things are right now, you’re going to ruin your life.”

This broken engagement left a lasting impact on Demi. Her struggle with addiction during her rise to fame was partly fueled by the trust issues she developed. "She had major trust issues after that," an insider tells Closer. "It was a difficult time for Demi, and she did things that many considered self-destructive at the time."

Despite their rocky past, Demi and Emilio have since become friends. "She realizes it's for the best they didn't get married," the insider adds. Meanwhile, Demi went on to marry and divorce Bruce Willis and Ashton Kutcher, while Emilio married and divorced Paula Abdul.

A Sweet '80s Romance: Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall

Now, let's shift gears and talk about the queen of '80s movies, Molly Ringwald. When she starred alongside Anthony Michael Hall in Sixteen Candles in 1984, she didn't give him much attention. But everything changed the following year on the Breakfast Club set. Being the only true high-schoolers in the cast, Molly and Anthony, both now 56, spent a lot of time together.

Anthony's mom, who was an extra in the movie, later recounted a heartwarming moment. Molly confided in her, saying she was falling in love with Anthony. "I said, 'That’s so sweet — why don’t you tell him?' The next day, they were walking around holding hands," she recalled.
