Let me tell you, raising two teenagers is no small feat, but for television legal expert Nancy Grace, it’s a whirlwind she wouldn’t trade for the world. In an exclusive interview with Closer, the 61-year-old shares her gratitude for her life with husband David Linch and their 13-year-old twins, John David and Lucy. "I never thought I'd be married or have a family," she reveals. "And now I'm surrounded by so many blessings."
Nancy's life wasn't always filled with joy. Her journey to personal happiness took a devastating turn in 1979 when her fiancé was tragically shot and killed by a co-worker. This heart-wrenching event became the catalyst for her career as a prosecutor and later as a television legal analyst, author, and advocate for victims' rights. Today, she wears yet another hat as an executive producer for The Good Father: The Martin MacNeill Story, a true-crime drama based on the conviction of a doctor for the murder of his wife, told from the perspective of their daughter Alexis Somers. The film premiered on Lifetime on October 2, bringing Nancy’s passion for justice to a wider audience.

Why Did You Feel Compelled to Bring the Martin MacNeill Story to Life on Screen?
Let me tell you, this wasn’t just a story to me—it was real. These were real people living through unimaginable circumstances. Michele MacNeill was a mother to eight children—four biological and four adopted. She was the epitome of trust and love, but unfortunately, she had no idea she was married to a con artist. This story gripped me from the start, and I knew it had to be told.
Getting Close to Alexis: How Does It Feel to Be So Deeply Involved in the Lives of Those You Cover?
It’s not easy. I get emotionally invested because these aren’t just stories—they’re real lives. Imagine the heartache Alexis must have felt when she began to suspect her father, the man she adored, was capable of such deception. Alexis went to medical school inspired by her father, only to discover he was a liar through and through. It’s heart-wrenching, and it stays with you.
Your Career Was Born Out of Tragedy. How Did the Murder of Your Fiancé Keith Griffin Shape Your Path?
Back then, I was in school, and when Keith was taken from me, I dropped out. I felt lost, like I didn’t know who I was anymore. It wasn’t until I decided to go back to school to become a felony prosecutor that I found my purpose again. That experience completely transformed me.
What Stands Out Most When You Reflect on That Time?
Those days are a blur now. My parents would drive me to the trial every day—it was about two hours from home. I barely remember much of it, but I do recall taking the stand. I remember seeing the man who killed Keith in court, and he couldn’t look me in the eye. I remember seeing Keith’s bloody clothes and the defense attorneys looking down when I walked by. It’s something you never forget.
Do You Ever Wonder What Your Life Would Be Like If That Tragedy Hadn’t Happened?
Occasionally, I do look back, but not often. My life changed dramatically when I met my husband, David, and we had our twins, John David and Lucy. These past 14 years have been the happiest of my life. Instead of dwelling on what could have been, I focus on what I have now and how I can make the most of it. Life is precious, and I’m grateful for every moment.
Did You Ever Dream of a Career in TV Before Court TV Came Calling?
No way! I grew up in middle Georgia on a red dirt road, with a well dug by my grandfather in the backyard. All I wanted was to lock up bad guys and help crime victims. When Court TV approached me about being a commentator, I turned them down at first. It wasn’t until my district attorney retired, and I wasn’t sure what to do next, that I gave it a shot.

What Made You Finally Say Yes?
It was a leap of faith. I packed up two boxes of clothes, a curling iron, and $300, and headed to New York. I figured, what could go wrong? It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Are There Other Cases You’d Love to Bring to the Screen?
Absolutely! There are some in the works, and there will always be cases that need to be highlighted—not just because they tell a story, but because they deliver an important message. These stories matter, and they deserve to be told.
Have You Ever Been Starstruck Meeting Someone Famous?
You bet! Angela Lansbury left me speechless, but she’s just as gracious in person as she is on screen.
What Do You Do for Fun?
I love to cook, read, run, camp, RV, snorkel, dive—you name it! Traveling with my family is one of my greatest joys. There’s so much of this world I want to see with David and the twins.
What’s Your Secret to a Happy Marriage?
David and I argue like any couple, but we’re thinkers, and I’m a trial lawyer, so things can get lively! Luckily, David’s not a lawyer, and he has a way of making me laugh, even in the toughest moments. We laugh a lot, and I know I can count on him. That’s key—finding someone you believe in, someone you want to be more like, and someone you’d want your kids to emulate. That’s how I feel about David. He’s my rock.
Was Motherhood Always Part of Your Plan?
Of course, I wanted to be a mom, but after Keith’s murder, I thought family life was out of reach for me. Seeking justice became my life. It took time to heal, and for a long time, I couldn’t risk losing it all again. But here I am, raising two amazing kids, and it’s been worth every challenge.

Oh, keeping up with boy/girl twins is no joke! I thought things would get easier as they grew older, but they don’t. They just get more interesting!
