Introducing Mickey to a Legendary Legacy

Zak recently opened up to People about how he and his wife, Olivia June, are thoughtfully bringing Robin into Mickey’s life. “We’ve definitely considered how we want to introduce my son’s grandfather, my dad, into his life,” Zak shared on Thursday, May 28. “Through his movies and the cartoons he participated in is a fantastic way.”

Mickey’s fascination with his grandfather begins right in his nursery, where a special piece of animation history hangs on the wall. “My son, Mickey, points at a cel [a celluloid sheet used for cartoons] that we have in his room of my dad—that has the genie from Aladdin,” Zak explained. It’s a touching reminder of the incredible talent and charm that made Robin Williams one of Hollywood’s most cherished performers.

A Room Filled With Memories

Surrounding Mickey with memories of his grandfather is part of Zak and Olivia's plan to keep Robin’s spirit alive. “He’s got a collection of photos and animation cels throughout our home that he sees on a daily basis,” Zak elaborated. “It’s about being mindful and introducing the elements and stories about him slowly.”

Each piece in Mickey’s room serves as a tribute to Robin’s incredible career and the joy he brought to millions of fans worldwide. From the Genie of Aladdin to the unforgettable characters in Mrs. Doubtfire, Mickey is growing up surrounded by the magic his grandfather created.

Celebrating a Beloved Entertainer and Family Man

By keeping these special mementos close, Zak and Olivia hope Mickey will grow to appreciate not just Robin’s talent but also the man behind the performances. “The key thing would be for us to introduce it slowly and meaningfully,” Zak added. “We want to take opportunities to share stories and his values in a way that can be appreciated and embodied.”

This approach ensures Mickey grows up understanding his grandfather not just as a celebrated actor but as a cherished family member who left an indelible mark on those who loved him.

Zak welcomed Mickey into the world in June 2019, five years after Robin’s passing. In honor of his father, Zak named his son McLaurin, after Robin’s middle name. It’s a heartfelt tribute to a man whose humor and kindness touched so many lives.

“I miss him all the time,” Zak revealed shortly after Robin’s passing. “Often, if I see something or if I’m watching a film, I think, ‘Oh, man, he would have appreciated this’ or ‘He would have gotten a laugh out of this.’” Robin’s legacy lives on through Zak and his siblings, Zelda, 30, and Cody, 28, as they carry forward the values and love their father instilled in them.
