When Mark Consuelos Was a Jealous Guy: The Early Days of His Marriage
You’d never guess it by looking at him today, but Mark Consuelos wasn’t always the confident, cool guy we know now. Back in the early days of his marriage to Kelly Ripa, Mark admits he had a serious case of jealousy. At 49 years old, the star of Riverdale recalled a time when his trust issues got the better of him. It was during a period when he was working on a show in Boston, and his wife, also 49, wasn’t answering the phone. This little hiccup set off alarm bells in Mark’s head.
“Back then, we didn’t have cell phones. I got this really bad feeling in my gut,” Mark revealed in Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue’s new book, What Makes a Marriage Last. “So, I booked a flight to New York mid-show and called her from the plane, asking her what she was up to that night.” Can you imagine the drama? But hey, we all have our moments, right?
The Plan to Catch Kelly Red-Handed
Kelly, being the witty and honest person she is, admitted in the book that she thought Mark’s behavior was “very fishy.” She recalled how he tried to set her up when he returned home. “He wanted to catch me in the act, so he told the doorman to call up to the apartment and say there was a flower delivery for me,” Kelly explained with a laugh. “I was excited because I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, he’s sending me flowers!’”

But instead of flowers, Mark walked in on his wife holding a johnny mop in one hand and wearing a bathrobe. “He comes in, doesn’t even say hello,” Kelly hilariously remembered. “He’s looking around like a detective. I’m still waiting for the flower guy! Meanwhile, he’s scanning the scene like it’s a crime drama.”
Learning to Trust and Grow Together
Thankfully, Mark didn’t find anything incriminating that day—just his own jealous nature staring back at him. “It feels horrible and you know you’re wrong,” he admitted about his past behavior. “These days, I’m a lot less jealous. I’ve learned to trust Kelly more, and that trust has been the foundation of our relationship.”
That pivotal moment taught Mark and Kelly how important trust is in a marriage. The couple recently celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary, and they both admit their relationship has only gotten stronger over the years. “We found each other at the right time in our lives,” Kelly said on Radio Andy on April 17. “We were young, but we were both ready to commit. And with that commitment came comfort, confidence, and a lot of fun. Our sex life is still really healthy, and we have so much fun together.”
