Feeling grateful. Eva Mendes took a moment to reflect on her upbringing with her single mom, Eva Perez Suarez, after announcing a generous donation in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Her heartfelt words resonated with fans and highlighted the challenges she faced growing up.
“Thank you for this and I send it right back and then some,” Eva, 46, replied to a fan’s comment praising her for donating on Sunday, June 7. “You know, coming from a background where money was tight — we were on food stamps for a while and I saw my mom struggle so much — I always feel like it could’ve been us out there. Life can be unpredictable, and things can turn in an instant. That’s why I understand the importance of standing up for justice and equality.”
Standing Up for Justice
The Place Beyond the Pines star is one of the many celebrities raising awareness and advocating for justice for George Floyd, who tragically lost his life at the hands of a white Minneapolis police officer on May 25. Eva, who shares daughters Esmeralda, 5, and Amada, 4, with her longtime partner Ryan Gosling, has taken a stand against racism in a meaningful way.

“There are so many incredible organizations out there that need and deserve our support,” she wrote via Instagram. “I recently donated to some amazing groups like @blklivesmatter and @colorofchange, but having worked with @eji_org for nearly ten years, I can confidently say that their work is nothing short of profound. These are real leaders in the fight for racial justice. As always, I’ll try my best to read your comments, so please let me know which organizations you think need more support right now.”
Being a Role Model
We’re not surprised that the Hitch star is doing her best to be a role model for others. After all, she’s excelling as a mother to Esmeralda and Amada. While Eva makes balancing a demanding Hollywood career and raising two young girls look effortless, she’s been candid about the challenges of motherhood.
“No one ever told me that parenting would be such a demanding job—one that requires an incredible amount of skill,” she shared on The Kelly Clarkson Show in November 2019. “Being a chauffeur, a cook, and a personal assistant to an often ungrateful boss is no easy task. Honestly, in any other profession, you’d have to pass a test, but the only test I had to pass was a pregnancy test. That doesn’t seem fair, does it?”
The Joys and Challenges of Parenthood
The stunning businesswoman, who began dating Ryan, 39, in 2011, humorously highlighted the most challenging aspect of being a parent.
“Let me tell you, the hardest part of parenting hands-down is the constant need for snacks,” she joked. “You’ve got to carry snacks everywhere you go, and not just any snacks—variety is key. My kids like something different all the time, so you need to keep it fresh, especially on those long car rides. Trust me, even a quick trip to the market requires snacks in the car. It’s a must!”
