When Duchess Kate (née Middleton) decided to incorporate paint into her son Prince Louis’ second birthday photo shoot back in April, she probably should’ve anticipated the chaos that was about to unfold. The beloved royal mom recently opened up about the adorable portraits and revealed that her youngest wasn’t the only one who ended up covered in colorful mess.
“I should’ve taken a photograph of what I looked like afterward!” the Duchess of Cambridge, 38, joked during an appearance on ITV’s This Morning on Thursday, May 7. “Thankfully, that wasn’t documented… but trust me, I looked just like Louis at the end of it all.” Kate’s candid admission gives fans a delightful peek into the playful and hands-on parenting style she’s known for.
Paint, Play, and Royal Memories

For Prince Louis’ big day on April 23, Kate — who shares Louis and his siblings, Prince George, 6, and Princess Charlotte, 5, with husband Prince William — released a series of snapshots she captured of Louis happily playing with paint. “Sharing a sneak peek of Prince Louis’ handiwork ahead of his second birthday,” the royal couple captioned the images on their Instagram page. These photos not only celebrate Louis’ milestone but also highlight Kate’s knack for capturing genuine moments that resonate with fans worldwide.

A Royal Birthday with Heart
The future Queen of England also gave her fans a behind-the-scenes look at her daughter Princess Charlotte’s fifth birthday photo shoot earlier in May. Instead of a traditional portrait session, Kate decided to document the day through meaningful moments as they volunteered by delivering food to older residents. “This was part of a collection,” Kate explained. “That photograph of Charlotte was part of a series aiming to tell a story. That’s really what we hope people will take away from this project — an inspiration to tell their own stories from a personal level and share what they’re going through.”
Quarantine Challenges and Triumphs
While Kate has come up with creative ways to mark her children’s birthdays during quarantine, life hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. The brunette beauty opened up about the struggles she’s faced as a mom navigating self-isolation amid the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s hard to explain to a 5 or almost 6 or 7-year-old what’s happening,” Kate admitted on the U.K. morning show, noting that adjusting to homeschooling George and Charlotte has been particularly exhausting. “George gets so upset because he just wants to do all of Charlotte’s projects. Spider sandwiches are way cooler than literacy work, apparently!”

Despite the challenges, Kate and William, who tied the knot in April 2011, are cherishing the quality time they’re spending with their children and other royal family members like Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. Although the Cambridges are quarantining separately, they “check in daily with family members and speak to them about the news and other updates,” the duchess revealed. “It’s really tough. We hadn’t done a lot of FaceTime or video calls before, but now we’re doing it all the time, and honestly, it’s been such a blessing. In some ways, we’ve had more face time than ever before, but it’s definitely not easy.”
