As a mom of two, Drew Barrymore found herself heartbroken after the tragic death of George Floyd. The actress, known for her role in "Santa Clarita Diet," revealed how her approach to parenting has "forever changed" as she grapples with how to discuss racism with her daughters, Olive, 7, and Frankie, 6. In an open and honest conversation, Drew shares her journey of understanding and learning alongside her children.
A New Awareness
During an Instagram Live session with Dr. Aliza Pressman, host of the "Raising Good Humans" podcast, Drew Barrymore, now 45, expressed her feelings about the current state of the world. "I feel like this is the start of a real change and a deeper awareness that I thought I already had," Drew confessed. Watching the nationwide protests following Floyd's death under the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis on May 25, Drew admitted, "I feel so different right now. It's like I'm seeing the world in a new light, and it's overwhelming but necessary."

Parental Growth
Drew acknowledged that her life as a parent has changed forever. "I feel compelled to jump into this movement and embrace the change that's happening," she said, emphasizing her commitment to supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. "I understand the mission, but I also know that I don't fully understand it. And that's okay. It's about learning and growing together." Drew admitted that while she wants to be the expert for her kids, this topic requires a different approach. "I want to be honest with them and say, 'I don't know everything, and I'm learning alongside you.'"

Discussing such heavy topics with young children isn't easy, but Drew is determined to navigate it thoughtfully. "I don't want to come off as preachy or holier-than-thou," she explained. "Instead, I'm focusing on raising thoughtful people who understand the importance of kindness, empathy, and equality." Through this process, Drew aims to instill values that will guide her daughters throughout their lives.
Connecting with Her Kids
Sharing her thoughts on social media, Drew revealed how she's been struggling to find the right words to explain racial injustice to her young daughters. "I have tried to approach so much of life with the mindset of, 'I don't know this, and I'm learning it with you,'" she said. "This is an approach I want to take with my kids, even though it's challenging because as a parent, you often feel like you need to have all the answers. But with this subject, I can't pretend I do. It's about being honest and vulnerable."
