Robert Redford's Life Beyond The Spotlight: Ranching, Art, And Family

Inside Robert Redford's Life 2 Years After Retiring From Acting

When you think of Hollywood legends, Robert Redford is one of the first names that comes to mind. But long before he became a cinematic icon, the actor was inspired by the likes of Roy Rogers and his trusty horse, Trigger. "I've always had a soft spot for palominos," Robert reveals, his voice filled with nostalgia. Since the 1980s, the star has been keeping horses on his sprawling Utah ranch, where he continues to ride and care for them at the age of 84. "Even now, Bob is out there working the land, surrounded by his animals," a close friend confides to Closer Weekly. "He’s in remarkable shape for his age, and his passion for ranch life is as strong as ever."

Redford’s life isn’t just about looking back at his storied career; it’s about embracing what lies ahead. "I've never been one to dwell on the past," he says with a laugh. "Life is about moving forward, finding new ways to engage with the world." On August 18, the legendary actor celebrated his 84th birthday in true Robert Redford fashion—quietly and surrounded by family. His wife, Sibylle, and their children, Shauna, Jamie, and Amy, joined him for a low-key celebration, proving that family remains at the heart of everything he does.

Rediscovering Passion in Later Life

For Redford, life in Utah offers a refreshing change from the fast-paced world of Hollywood. At this stage in his life, he's rediscovering hobbies he didn't have time for during his peak years in the film industry. "As you grow older, you start craving something fresh, something new," he reflects. "So I’ve gone back to my roots—sketching and drawing." This artistic journey takes him back to his younger days in Florence, Italy, where he studied art and painting. Alongside his creative pursuits, Robert has developed a deep appreciation for Native American art, collecting everything from ceremonial clothing to intricate sand oil paintings. "Sibylle and I share this passion," he says warmly. "It’s one of the many things that make our relationship so special. We’ve built a life together that’s both peaceful and endlessly fascinating."

Though Robert has largely stepped away from acting, his influence in the world of independent cinema remains as strong as ever. As the founder of the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Institute, he continues to champion emerging filmmakers, providing them with a platform to showcase their work. "Bob is always on the go, always involved in something meaningful," says his friend. "He’s never been one to sit still, and I don’t think he ever will be." Despite his retirement from acting, Redford isn’t ruling out future projects. "If the right opportunity comes along, he’ll definitely jump in," his friend adds. "He may be older, but he’s far from finished. In his own words, 'I may be old, but I’m not done yet.'"
