Rob Lowe Says His 'Greatest Joy' Is Being the Dad of His Sons

Rob Lowe may have traveled the world as a Hollywood star, but nothing compares to the love he feels when he's at home with his family. The beloved star of The West Wing says his "greatest joy" is being the father of his two sons, Matthew and John, with his wife of nearly three decades, Sheryl Berkoff.

During a recent interview with People, Rob, now 56, opened up about the joys and challenges of parenthood. "They teach me lessons every day, and they give me s—t every day, but it’s all wrapped up in a ton of love," he joked. "My greatest joy is definitely being a part of their lives. It’s a privilege I never take for granted."

Reflecting on Parenthood: The Sweet and Bittersweet Moments

The star of The Outsiders gushed over his sons, Matthew, 27, and John, 25, as he reminisced about the "bittersweet, with an emphasis on the sweet," moments he’s shared with them over the years. As Thanksgiving approaches, the devoted dad is eagerly looking forward to spending more time with his family.

“We always go all out for the holidays,” Rob revealed, sharing details about his family’s cherished traditions. “My wife, Sheryl, is the mastermind behind all the fun. She plans everything meticulously, and there’s always an incredible feast. It’s a time to come together and celebrate what truly matters.”

One of the most beloved traditions is their annual Turkey Bowl football game, a tradition that has been part of the Lowe family since the 1970s. “We take it very seriously,” Rob laughed. “One year, we even had referees! It’s something we’ve carried with us no matter where we’ve lived—whether it was Ohio or California. It’s a way to keep the spirit of the holiday alive.”

Adapting to the Times: A Different Thanksgiving

However, this year’s holiday is going to look a little different for the Lowe family due to the ongoing global pandemic. To ensure everyone’s safety, Rob and Sheryl, 59, plan to scale back their celebrations to include only their closest family members. “Everybody’s going to get tested for the virus,” Rob added, emphasizing the importance of staying safe during these challenging times.

    Gratitude in Challenging Times

Despite the restrictions, Rob noted that this year’s Thanksgiving will be a time for reflection. “Sometimes it takes something unpleasant to make us appreciate what’s truly important in our lives,” he said. “That’s what this Thanksgiving is going to be about for me and my family—focusing on gratitude and cherishing the moments we have together.”

Rob and Sheryl have been together since they tied the knot in 1991, and their bond remains as strong as ever. Even though balancing their careers and family life can be tough, the SAG Award winner and his professional makeup artist wife always prioritize their relationship and their children.

“Family means absolutely everything to Rob,” a close friend of the actor told Closer Weekly in 2017. “Rob is so close with his sons—they truly are his two best friends, along with their mother. It’s a testament to the love and commitment they share as a family.”
