Donny, who is 62, also joined in on the birthday celebrations. He posted a loving snapshot of himself and Virl, along with a deeply personal caption. “Many of you may not know that my oldest brothers, Virl and Tom, were born into our musical family with impaired hearing,” Donny wrote. He went on to explain how Virl could have easily let his hearing loss define him but instead chose to rise above it.
“Virl could’ve easily treated his deafness as a major setback, but he refused to let that be the case,” Donny continued. “Instead, he became a phenomenal leader within our Osmond pack, guiding and supporting all of us along the way.”
Virl’s Legacy of Leadership and Love
Donny praised Virl for being not only a leader but also someone who is deeply invested in the success of his siblings. “He continues to use and develop his unique gifts and abilities to bless the lives of those around him,” Donny said. “We all love his contagious enthusiasm and giant heart. Love you, Virl.”
Family Strength in Times of Adversity
Over the years, the Osmond family has faced its fair share of challenges. In January 2019, Marie shared how the family had rallied together after a particularly tough year. “My brother Jimmy is doing OK, he had a stroke,” she revealed during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. “My brother Tom had a quadruple bypass [surgery], Virl had a stroke, Jimmy [also] had a stroke [and] Donny had shoulder surgery … we’re praying.”

Despite these health setbacks, the family leaned on each other for strength. Marie explained how her faith helped her navigate through the struggles. In an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, she shared the life lesson she’s learned: “Pick yourself back up.”
“It applies to everything: bad relationships, dark things that sometimes happen — everything!” she said. “I believe in faith; I believe in hope; I believe in a positive attitude. I am not naive. I have lived through a lot of ups and downs. I really think the greatest gift we can leave our children is to teach them how to get back up after they fall down.”
