James Brolin's Grandchildren Aren't Always Hungry for His Wisdom
When it comes to passing down wisdom, James Brolin knows that being an iconic Hollywood star doesn't guarantee his advice will be eagerly received. In a candid chat with Closer Weekly, the star of Life in Pieces joked about how his grandkids, Trevor Brolin and Eden Brolin, "listen somewhat" to what he has to say. At 80 years young, James admits that his relationship with his grandkids is more about fishing trips than deep philosophical discussions. "Yeah, no... I don’t know if anybody likes my advice," he quips.
Still, His Words Sink In
Even though James humorously refers to himself as "old stupid, old pop," he knows that Trevor, 32, and Eden, 26, do pay attention to his words. "I do hear them when I do talk. I hear them repeating what I said later without realizing it, so they did listen somewhat," he shares with a grin. It's a reminder that even when advice isn't directly sought, it can still make an impact in unexpected ways.
Grandfatherhood is His Greatest Role
For James, being a grandfather is one of the most cherished roles he's ever had. He would drop everything to be there for Trevor and Eden, who are the children of his son, Josh Brolin, and Josh's first wife, Alice Adair. However, with busy careers, the distance between them has grown. "Eden has moved to the countryside in the Woodstock area of upstate New York," James explains. She also splits her time between Montana, where she stars on Paramount Network's hit series Yellowstone. Meanwhile, Trevor is in Albuquerque, New Mexico, working as an electrician. Despite the miles, James stays connected. "I talk to them a couple of times a month," he says warmly. "Just, 'Hi, how are you?' It's those little check-ins that keep us close."

Proud of Eden's Success
James is particularly proud of Eden's accomplishments. "She’s doing so well," he beams. "She’s the sweetest girl and she’s been singing and playing the piano since I remember... since she was 7 years old. This is kind of all natural to her." It's clear that Eden has a gift that runs deep in her veins, and James couldn't be prouder.
Besides Trevor and Eden, James is also the loving granddad to Josh's daughter, Westlyn. The Men in Black 3 star shares his adorable baby girl, who arrived in November 2018, with his third wife, Kathryn Boyd. The couple tied the knot in 2016, and their love has continued to grow with each passing year.
Welcoming a New Addition
James takes his role as a grandfather seriously, and he couldn't be more thrilled about Josh and Kathryn's current pregnancy. When he heard the news of his fourth grandchild on the way, the Academy Award winner says he and his wife, Barbra Streisand, were "jumping" for joy. "First, they told us very early on and said, ‘Don’t tell anybody,’ and I think that’s because [Kathryn] wanted to have her sonograms back and be sure of everything," James sweetly reveals. "And then, when they found out it was another girl and [they] told us, we just were jumping up and down."
