During her 11 seasons on M*A*S*H, Loretta Swit transformed the character of Margaret Houlihan from a one-dimensional "Hot Lips" stereotype into a complex, strong role model for working women. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. In the fourth season, Loretta, the sole female lead in this beloved comedy-drama set during the Korean War, took a break because she felt Margaret was being used as nothing more than a comedic foil for Hawkeye (Alan Alda). This bold move paid off. When Loretta returned for season five, she was given a more active role in shaping Margaret’s character, turning her into a warm, brave, and deeply loved figure. “I’m a feminist through and through,” says Loretta, now 84, in an interview with Closer. “And I’ve always preferred playing strong women.”

Loretta recalls that she auditioned late in the process, after hundreds of others had been considered. She walked into the audition blind, having never seen the movie. There was no script provided, and she also had an offer for a film with Olivia de Havilland, which she admits put her in "orbit" because of her admiration for the legendary actress. This may have pushed the producers to make a quick decision. They met, got to know each other, and the rest is history. Interestingly, Loretta has never watched the movie, choosing instead to create her own interpretation of the character.
