Born into a Mexican-American family, Emilio Delgado found his big break in 1968 when he landed a role in the soap opera Canción de la Raza. But it was his role as Luis on Sesame Street that truly cemented his place in pop culture history. Joining the show in 1971, Emilio became a household name, bringing joy and laughter to millions of children worldwide. One of the most iconic moments in the series came when Luis tied the knot with Maria, played by Sonia Manzano. That episode was a milestone, not just for the show but for representation on television.

Off-screen, Emilio's personal life was just as enchanting. He married his wife, Carole Delgado, in 1990, two years after their characters' televised wedding. Whether it was posing for photos at the HOLA Awards in 2010 or attending the annual We Wish You the Merriest celebration in 2013, Emilio and Carole radiated happiness. Even in the final months of his life, Emilio continued to cherish his time with Carole. He shared nostalgic photos on Instagram, including a throwback to the first selfie they ever took together in 1986. On Valentine's Day 2022, he posted a sweet picture of them together, reminding everyone of their enduring bond.

When Emilio received a heartbreaking blood cancer diagnosis in December 2020, Carole stood by his side every step of the way. She was there for him until his last moments, as he passed away peacefully at their Manhattan home after receiving hospice care. Together, they were committed to serving the community through their work with the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice, where Emilio served on the board.
After Emilio’s passing, the Bayard Rustin Center paid tribute to their dear friend: “We are heartbroken by the loss of our beloved friend & @RustinCenter Board Member Emilio Delgado. We send our love to his wife Carole & his family which truly included us all.” The message concluded with a powerful reminder of Emilio’s spirit: “He will be missed but his spirit, energy, & kindness remains with us ‘¡Pa’lante!’”
