When Did Elizabeth Banks Step Into Motherhood?
Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman’s love story began way back in 1992, their very first day at the University of Pennsylvania. From that moment, their connection only deepened, leading to a beautiful marriage in 2003. Over the years, their bond has only grown stronger, proving that true love really can withstand the test of time.

In March 2011, the Massachusetts native shared the joyous news of welcoming her first child, Felix, through gestational surrogacy. Elizabeth announced the heartwarming arrival on her personal website, marking the start of a new chapter in her life.

Choosing the name Felix was no accident. “Felix means ‘happy’ and ‘lucky’ in Latin,” she revealed with pride. “And true to his name, Felix is a very happy baby and a blessing on our life.”
Just over a year later, in November 2012, Elizabeth and Max were overjoyed to expand their family once more with the birth of their second son, Magnus. Again, they turned to gestational surrogacy to bring their little miracle into the world.
“Like Felix, Magnus was born via gestational surrogate,” Elizabeth shared on her website. “This experience has been more than we could have ever imagined. It's taught us so much about generosity and gratitude, and we’ve formed a bond that will last a lifetime.”
Elizabeth Banks on the Joys and Challenges of Parenthood
As any parent knows, the journey of raising two children is a unique and rewarding experience. Early on, Elizabeth admitted that adjusting to her new role as a mom of two was quite the adventure.
“Having two is very different from having one,” she told People in January 2013. “When you have one kid, you feel like you can just jet-set around, throw him on your hip, and get things done. You don’t realize how easy it is with just one until you add a second. Now I’m really a mom. Oh, I am a mom now! This is serious — I’m responsible for two people now.”
Their first Christmas as a family of four was nothing short of memorable. Elizabeth and Max decided to embrace the chaos and joy of the holiday season without any outside help.

“We had no help, no nannies, no babysitters. It was absolutely wild,” she recalled. “You forget how exhausting it is to wake up in the middle of the night and how draining it can be. I lost all my nails from doing dishes and cleaning bottles for 10 straight days!”
Despite their busy schedules, Elizabeth and Max have always approached parenting as a team. They balance their demanding careers while prioritizing their family life.
“The last romantic thing Max did for me? He took the kids to soccer practice in the rain while I got a massage for my birthday,” Elizabeth joked in a March 2019 interview with Closer. “We’ve found a great balance between work and family, and we respect each other so much. It’s a true partnership.”
