  • Let's get real here—do you ever get tired of performing 'American Pie'?

Not a chance. I’m Don McLean, and I’m thrilled to bring joy to people with my music. I’ve written other incredible songs that audiences adore, and I’m honored to share them. It’s all about doing things my way. Unlike some artists who might grow weary of their hits, I’ve always stayed true to myself and my vision.

    The Genesis of 'American Pie'

Take us back to the moment you wrote 'American Pie.' What was going through your mind?

I had a little nook where I’d retreat to write music. I had a tape recorder and my trusty guitar by my side. One day, an idea struck me, and I started reflecting on the past in this nostalgic way. The opening lines flowed effortlessly, like a genie escaping from a bottle. I didn’t know if it was going to be a hit or a flop, but I knew I was heading somewhere special.

    Fame: The Double-Edged Sword

How did you cope with the sudden fame that came with 'American Pie'?

That kind of fame is intense—like being in the spotlight 24/7. I was on the news every night, and girls were screaming and fainting at my concerts. It was wild, almost Beatle-like, except I wasn’t a teen. I was 25, and while it was amusing, I realized it could be dangerous. I had to remind myself that fame is fleeting and focus on what truly mattered.

  • What were some of the dangers you faced?

For a while, I received death threats, which, let’s be honest, is part of the territory for celebrities. It was a surreal experience. You stop feeling like a person and become an object, a spectacle. But I kept telling myself, "Hey, I’m just a lucky guy who happened to strike gold. This will pass, and I’ll be fine as long as I save my money and have a nice home."

The Journey to Becoming Don McLean

Did you always dream of being a performer?

Absolutely. I envisioned myself as this romantic figure who could sing about everything under the sun—from current events to personal emotions. That’s the artist I wanted to be, and that’s the artist I became.

Did your family support your aspirations?

Not really. My dad, before he passed away, was terrified of me pursuing a career in show business. To him, it was like running off to join the circus. But I was determined to follow my dreams.

    Breaking Through

    What was your big break?

Getting accepted by Pete Seeger was huge. I’d been writing to him since junior high, and when he agreed to collaborate with me, it was a game-changer. Being around him taught me so much about navigating fame and staying grounded.

Did you ever consider a different career path?

I was studying finance and economics at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., where I grew up. For a while, I could have pursued a career on Wall Street, but I’ve always been a bit of a lone wolf. Music was my true calling.

    The Price of Fame

    Did fame come with sacrifices?

Oh, absolutely. It strained two marriages and damaged relationships. It made maintaining friendships incredibly challenging. At 25, most of my peers were content with having a steady job and a modest home. I was a millionaire and a global star, which created a huge gap between us. People only wanted to talk about my concerts and fame, but I managed to stay grounded because I wasn’t deeply tied to many people.

    A Legacy of Pride

What are you most proud of?

I’m incredibly proud of raising two amazing children who haven’t struggled with addiction. They’re both wonderful human beings, and I’m thankful for that. I’m also proud of my resilience and ability to overcome adversity. However, I do regret my rocky relationship history.

Are you in a relationship now?

Yes, I’m with Paris Dylan, and she’s been my rock for seven-and-a-half years. She travels with me everywhere and is the light of my life. I don’t know what I’d do without her.

    The Next Chapter

Do your kids share your musical talents?

Definitely! My son Wyatt is an exceptional guitarist and songwriter, and he’s also an expert in rare books and manuscripts. My daughter, Jackie Lee, is a gifted singer and songwriter who writes stories and plays. She’s also a wonderful mother to her two lovely daughters.

What’s next for you and 'American Pie'?

I’m thrilled to be on a world tour with my band, and the crowds have been fantastic. We’re also working on a Broadway musical that will feature 10 to 15 of my songs. It will tell my story and the story of "American Pie" and its impact on America. It’s going to be something truly special!
