Oh, the Gaines family sure knows how to tug at our heartstrings. Recently, Fixer Upper's beloved hosts Chip and Joanna Gaines opened up about their son Drake embarking on his senior year of high school. Let’s dive deeper into their reflections and how this milestone has them reminiscing about the past while embracing the future.

When Drake Started School

Chip, who’s 47 years young, reminisced about how Joanna felt when Drake started school all those years ago. "She was all emotional back in kindergarten, you know? That’s understandable," Chip told People on Thursday, August 25. "But now, with this being his senior year, it’s more of a celebratory moment. It’s about celebrating this incredible journey and all the growth Drake has shown over the years."

Joanna’s Perspective on Family Dynamics

Joanna, the heart and soul of Magnolia, chimed in with her own thoughts. “You know, for us, it’s not just about saying goodbye to one chapter. It’s about realizing that we’re this tight-knit family unit, but now we’re expanding into something bigger. There are seven of us, but the moment one baby leaves, it changes everything,” she shared, her voice tinged with both pride and nostalgia.

  • Joanna continued, “I can’t help but think back to the days when he was just a little baby. How did time fly by so fast? It’s incredible, but it’s also bittersweet. We’re asking ourselves, ‘How do we slow down time?’ because deep down, we know time doesn’t actually slow down.”

    Stopping Time: Joanna’s Approach

Even though she acknowledged the difficulty of letting go, Joanna explained how she found a way to make the most of these fleeting moments. “Here’s the thing: when you’re intentional about how you spend your days and evenings, you can actually slow time down in a way. You savor those moments, you really soak them in. That’s what we’re aiming for—paying attention, cherishing every moment, and sending our boy off with love and encouragement,” she concluded.

Chip added his thoughts, affirming that as parents, they’ve done their job well. “It’s exciting to see what Drake will become. It’s healthy for him to spread his wings, and we’re here cheering him on every step of the way,” he said with a proud smile.

    Joanna’s Essay: A Heartfelt Goodbye

This wasn’t the first time the HGTV power couple has opened up about Drake’s impending departure. In a heartfelt essay for the Magnolia Journal in mid-August, Joanna delved into her emotions. “Soon, our oldest son, Drake, will be leaving home for college. Sure, it’s filled with gratitude and excitement, but it’s also a loss in its own way,” she wrote, her words resonating with parents everywhere.

She elaborated, “I catch glimpses now of what that life will look like without him around every day, and it’s hard not to wonder how many times it might bring me to tears. It’s a bittersweet moment, but one we embrace with open arms.”

    Looking Forward with Positivity

Despite the emotional rollercoaster, Joanna remains optimistic about Drake’s growth and the changes the Gaines family is facing. “Life isn’t just about waiting for the brightest moments; it’s also about finding growth in the falls. It’s about surrendering ourselves to the promise of what’s ahead,” she wrote, her wisdom shining through her words.
