Before the era of one-name celebrities like Beyoncé or Eminem, there was Charo. Born in Spain, this remarkable woman became a TV sensation during the '60s and '70s. As a comedian, actress, and flamenco guitarist, she captivated audiences with her charm, beauty, and self-deprecating humor. In a recent interview with Closer, the 71-year-old Charo shared her journey and how she embraced her accent to turn it into a positive attribute. "I realized that my accent wasn't something to hide. It's part of who I am, and I decided to have fun with it," she said.

Charo's resilience extends far beyond her professional life. In 2019, she faced an unimaginable loss when her husband and manager, Kjell Rasten, took his own life. The couple had been together for over four decades and shared one adult son. "Life can change in an instant, and it can feel like you've been thrown into the darkest place imaginable," Charo reflected. "But you have to find the strength to survive. You owe it to yourself and those who love you."

  • Charo's early life was marked by upheaval and uncertainty. Born into a family that once enjoyed prosperity, her world changed dramatically when Francisco Franco came to power in Spain. "We were wealthy, but everything changed overnight. My father disappeared, and I remember seeing my mother cry quietly, thinking we weren't watching. We were forced out of the estate we'd owned for generations. I didn't see my father again until I was 18," she recalled. These experiences taught her the importance of resilience and adaptability.

    The Influence of Her Father

What kind of person was your father?

Charo's father was a champion of education, freedom, and equality. Even before he left Spain, he instilled these values in his daughters. "He worked tirelessly to ensure my sister and I understood the importance of education. He believed it was priceless. He also made us promise never to get involved in politics. If he hadn't, I'd probably be a congresswoman today!" Charo joked. Her father's influence continues to guide her decisions and outlook on life.

Do you ever wish you'd pursued a career in politics?

Charo admitted that she often finds herself frustrated with the state of modern politics. "Every time I watch the news, I find myself yelling at the screen. Someone needs to speak the truth. I'd be causing trouble at the White House if I were in politics. The only thing stopping me from becoming president is the fact that I wasn't born in America, but I'd love to be a congresswoman!"

    Discovering Her Passion for Music

  • Charo's love for music began in her childhood, surrounded by the vibrant sounds of flamenco. "When we were wealthy, my grandmother made a deal with the Gypsies, or Gitanos, allowing them to live on our land. Every evening, they'd gather around a bonfire and sing into the night. My sister and I became close friends with their children, and I became fascinated by the sound of the guitar. At seven years old, they finally let me play. I wasn't great, but as a child, your brain absorbs everything like a sponge."

What was it like studying with Andrés Segovia?

Charo's journey as a guitarist took a significant turn when she auditioned for the legendary classical guitarist Andrés Segovia. "At the audition, they looked at me and said, 'What are you doing here? This isn't for girls!' I was furious, but I played anyway. And as they say in America, I got a callback!" Segovia's mentorship left an indelible mark on Charo's career and musical style.

Where did your famous catchphrase, "cuchicuchi," originate?

Charo's iconic catchphrase has a heartwarming backstory. "My grandmother adored animals, and we had a dog named Cuchillo, which means knife. He was a mix of a Saint Bernard and a pit bull and was protective of our family. He couldn't wag his tail properly because of an injury, so he'd just wiggle up front when he was happy. I used to imitate him, and that's how the movement started. I called him 'Cuchi' because 'Cuchillo' was too long for a 3-year-old to say."

    Facing Grief and Moving Forward

We're deeply sorry about the loss of your husband. Can you tell us about that time?

Charo shared her heart-wrenching experience with the loss of her husband. "What happened to me is something I pray no one else has to endure. Kjell was on prednisone for a skin condition, and one of the side effects can be suicidal thoughts. It happened so suddenly, without any warning or argument. The dog led me to where I found him. It was devastating."

What advice do you have for others dealing with grief?

Charo emphasized the importance of finding strength in life's darkest moments. "Remember, life is precious. It's worth fighting for, even when you feel like giving up. You have people who need you. Prednisone has saved countless lives, but it's crucial to be cautious about withdrawal and suicidal thoughts."

What helped you heal after such a profound loss?

"I kept reminding myself that my family needs me, and I love them unconditionally. The support from fans on social media also played a huge role in my recovery. Their kind words reminded me of all the good I've done and brought me back from a very dark place," Charo shared.

    Looking Ahead

Do you think you'll date again?

Charo expressed that she has no plans to enter another relationship. "I loved my husband deeply, and I believe I'll see him in heaven. No one could replace the love we shared. My focus now is on my son and family."
