Hey there, TV lovers! If you're a fan of Blue Bloods, you're going to want to hear this. The world of the Reagan family is expanding, and Donnie Wahlberg is set to star in the new CBS show Boston Blue. And guess what? Tom Selleck might just make a surprise appearance. That's right, folks, the iconic actor is "open" to making a cameo, according to insiders.

Tom Selleck's Feelings on the End of Blue Bloods

An insider exclusively tells Closer, "Tom’s been pretty vocal about his feelings regarding the network ending Blue Bloods. He was not ready to say goodbye to that role, and naturally, he's very open to coming back for cameos on Donnie's new show." It seems like Tom Selleck, known for his portrayal of Detective Jesse Stone and the legendary character Magnum, is ready to revisit the Reagan family, even if it’s just for a brief moment.

Donnie Wahlberg: Star and Executive Producer of Boston Blue

Now, let's talk about Donnie Wahlberg. At 55, he's not only starring in the new show but also serving as an executive producer of Boston Blue, which is set in Boston and will be an offshoot of the beloved Blue Bloods. In this new adventure, Donnie reprises his role as Danny Reagan, who embarks on a new journey with the Boston Police Department. It's a fresh start for Danny, and fans are eager to see how his character evolves in this new setting.

  • While CBS has announced that Boston Blue will premiere during the 2025-2026 season, details on the rest of the cast remain under wraps. However, one thing is certain: the bond between Tom Selleck, 80, and Donnie Wahlberg remains as strong as ever, even after Blue Bloods concluded its 14-season run in December 2024.

A Friendship That Transcends the Screen

"They are still very close," the insider reveals. "Over the nearly 15 years they worked together, they developed such a fantastic relationship. They’re genuine friends, and in a lot of ways, they’ve grown to be like family. That’s how deeply bonded they are." Their friendship is a testament to the power of working together for so many years and creating something truly special.

Filming their last dinner scene on Blue Bloods was an emotional moment for both actors. "They both got emotional filming that scene because it was the last one. But now that this series is happening, they may get to do another," the source adds. "It’s set in Boston, so it won’t be a regular family dinner thing like on the last show, but there’s the potential, and Tom would be all for doing it."

As the final days on the Blue Bloods set approached, emotions ran high, and the cast members themselves revealed that tears were flowing freely on set. "I think when we finished filming is what I’ll remember most," Donnie recalled in a December 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly. "We all just kind of sat there for a long time, and I think everyone was hesitating to say something to say goodbye because, A, nobody wanted to, and B, everyone knew once somebody starts talking, it’s a wrap. The tissues are coming out, and everyone’s going to start crying, and sure enough, they did."

"I remember Tom read a poem — or, he didn’t read it. He’d memorized the poem and recited it," the New Kids on the Block singer continued. "He’s known the poem for years, and he did that from time to time. He would say a poem or he would quote some old famous saying or something. He would always just drop these sage little things upon us at dinner from time to time."

Which Blue Bloods Character Would You Like to See in a Spinoff?

Donnie said that after hearing Tom’s poem, he "started crying and didn’t stop for a few hours." The tender moment took him back to his childhood, where he would watch Tom on TV with his mom and grandma, both of whom have since passed. "Of course, I felt all the emotion of the crew and the rest of the cast members, but that moment I thought about how when I’d be watching him on TV, my mom would be sitting right behind me, right with my grandma, and they’re both gone now," Donnie said. "And how profound it was that somehow my life’s journey had taken me to this moment, and I just couldn’t help but feel incredibly blessed and incredibly grateful in that moment. And then it was my time to talk next, and that was really messy. I could barely get a word out."
