Kevin Wade Talks About the Impact of Ending 'Blue Bloods'

Let me tell you, folks, when it comes to TV shows, some endings leave a mark that's hard to forget. Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade recently opened up about the surprising decision to end the much-loved series, saying it left a noticeable void in CBS's lineup. During an appearance on CBS’ Book Club segment on January 27, Wade shared his thoughts on the show's legacy and the challenges of moving on.

But here's the kicker: Wade wasn’t just reminiscing about the past. He was promoting his new book, Johnny Careless, which tells the story of a former NYPD detective who now leads as Long Island’s police chief. This book, available now, draws fascinating parallels to Blue Bloods. Wade admitted that his years working on the show gave him the tools to craft a compelling and accurate narrative. “I had access to the best police minds in the metro area,” he said, referring to the research and expertise that went into writing the book.

Why Did CBS Pull the Plug on 'Blue Bloods'?

As Wade promoted his latest project, he acknowledged that fans are still holding out hope for another season of Blue Bloods. But CBS had other plans. Wade admitted that the network felt a significant gap in its Friday night lineup at 10 p.m., but he believes they’ll eventually find a way to fill it. “It went out in the world and a lot of love came back over the 14 years that we did it,” he said, highlighting the show's enduring popularity.

  • While Wade revealed he’s busy working on a sequel to his book, he hasn’t shared any details about a potential Blue Bloods spinoff—at least not yet. Fans, however, remain hopeful, especially since star Tom Selleck has expressed interest in continuing the franchise with his character, Frank Reagan. “He already misses the Blue Bloods cast and crew,” an insider told Closer magazine on January 27. “He would definitely do a spinoff and TV movie.”

Tom, who is now 79, has openly discussed the idea of a spinoff since the series wrapped after 14 seasons. The Magnum, P.I. legend mentioned that he was pitched a concept involving Frank retiring and leaving New York City, but he felt it wasn’t the right direction for a spinoff. “That’s really good, but I’m going to do another Jesse Stone movie. I’m going to write that,” Tom told Variety last December, hinting at his desire to revisit another beloved role.

During an interview, Tom expressed his confusion about CBS’s decision to cancel the show. “I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year,” he said. “But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.”

    What's Next for CBS?

For now, CBS has filled the Blue Bloods spot in its lineup with S.W.A.T., which returns with its midseason premiere on Friday, January 31, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. The episode is titled “Open Season.” The network provided a sneak peek of what’s to come: “When Hondo learns there’s a $1 million bounty on his head, 20-Squad must race to uncover the mysterious enemy from Hondo’s past who’s intent on revenge,” CBS revealed in a press release. “Also, Deacon and Tan butt heads over Tan’s changes to SWAT academy. Cast member Jay Harrington directs.”
