Behind the Scenes: Santiago Quiñones Opens Up About Blue Bloods’ Legacy

As the curtain falls on a beloved television series, Santiago Quiñones, co-executive producer of Blue Bloods, takes a moment to reflect on the incredible journey the show has taken over its nearly 15-year run. Santiago shares how the cast and crew felt as they prepared to say goodbye to a series that became more than just a job—it became a family.

“It’s an extraordinary privilege to be able to wrap up something that lasted so long, but honestly, it was also heart-wrenchingly sad,” Santiago revealed in an interview with The Credits, published on March 4. “As amazing as it was to be part of such a long-running show, it was equally painful to see the crew I had grown so close to—my second family—disperse. It hit home especially hard when we finished wrapping the stages, and everything we’d built together just vanished.”

The Final Chapter of Blue Bloods: A Show That Defined a Decade

Blue Bloods officially brought its 14-season journey to a close on December 13, 2024, with its final episode airing on CBS. Over its 14-year run, the series captured the hearts of millions with its compelling storytelling and unforgettable characters. At the heart of it all was Tom Selleck, who portrayed the iconic Frank Reagan, the patriarch of a family deeply rooted in law enforcement. Alongside him were Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Vanessa Ray, and Len Cariou, each bringing their unique talents to create a show that dominated the Friday night timeslot.

  • For Santiago, the end of the show wasn’t just about saying goodbye to a successful project—it was about saying goodbye to a decade-long chapter of his life. “I kept telling myself, ‘We’ll never have those moments back in those places again.’ It was incredibly tough. And not just for me, but for the entire cast and writing team as well. Ten years of my life were poured into that show,” he said. “When I first started, I was hesitant to make friends because I didn’t know how long I’d be there. But over time, the bonds we formed were unbreakable.”

A New Beginning: Boston Blue Sets Sail

While Blue Bloods may have concluded its run, fans of the Reagan family don’t need to say goodbye entirely. CBS announced on February 18 that a spinoff, Boston Blue, is in the works. This new series will feature a beloved member of the Reagan clan in a fresh setting, exploring new stories and challenges.

In Boston Blue, Donnie Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan, this time taking on a new position with the Boston Police Department. Upon arrival, he’ll team up with Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family in Boston. The spinoff promises to expand the universe of Blue Bloods, bringing fresh energy and excitement to the franchise.

So far, Donnie, 55, is the only confirmed cast member returning to the fold, though many fans are hopeful that other original cast members will make appearances. According to insiders, Tom Selleck, 80, has expressed interest in making a cameo appearance in the new series, which is set to premiere during the 2025-2026 broadcast season.

“Tom has been very vocal about his feelings regarding the network’s decision to end Blue Bloods. He wasn’t ready to let go of that role, so naturally, he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show,” an insider revealed to Closer. “Tom and Donnie share a special bond, and their on-screen chemistry was something audiences cherished. Fans would love to see them reunite on screen once again.”

Over the years, Tom and Donnie developed a friendship that transcended the screen. “They’ve grown incredibly close over the years,” the source explained. “Their relationship is more than professional; it’s personal. They’ve become like family, and that’s what made working on Blue Bloods so special for everyone involved.”
