It’s always tough saying goodbye to a cherished furry friend, and that’s exactly what Ree Drummond and her family had to do recently. On Wednesday, July 12, the beloved Drummond family announced the passing of their sweet dog Walter. This wasn’t just any dog for the Drummonds; Walter was family.
Ree, 54, took to Instagram to share her heartache with her followers. In a touching tribute filled with memories, she wrote, “Goodbye, sweet, wonderful Walter. I’m going to bed early tonight so I can turn off these tears and instead dream sweet memories of you, the most loving, loyal, pure-hearted doggie our family has ever known.” She added, “Go find your brother Charlie and have some fun, ol’ boy.” Walter’s loss is clearly a heavy blow to the entire Drummond household.
Ree’s post was met with an outpouring of love and support from her fans and fellow celebrities. Trisha Yearwood, a close friend, chimed in with heartfelt words, “Sending you all the love, my friend.” She reminded Ree that “Love walks on four paws,” a comforting reminder that the bond between humans and their pets is unbreakable.

A Family Affair of Fond Memories
Ree’s children, Alex, Paige, Bryce, Todd, and foster son Jamar, also felt Walter’s absence deeply. Alex, 26, quickly jumped into the comments section to share her own memories of the family’s beloved pet. “These pics melt my heart,” she wrote. “Most loving dog to ever exist.” It’s clear that Walter had a special place in Alex’s heart, just as he did with the entire Drummond clan.

Paige’s Heartfelt Goodbye
Paige, 23, also took a moment to honor Walter in her own way. She shared an emotional tribute on her Instagram Stories, accompanied by several photos of the basset hound. In one of the images, Paige is seen sitting with Walter on the porch, a place where countless memories were made. Another picture captures her hugging the beloved pet tightly. “There will never be another dog like you,” Paige wrote. “Happy trails, Walter.” Her words echo the sentiment of the entire family, who all cherished Walter deeply.
A Legacy of Love for Animals
Ree has always been an advocate for treating animals like family members. She and her husband, Ladd Drummond, own several dogs who roam freely on their sprawling Oklahoma ranch. Ree has a long history of loving animals, and her passion for them is evident in her lifestyle. “I have a porch full of dogs, from big athletic labs to floppy, lazy basset hounds,” she told People in April 2021. “I had a basset hound when I was a very young child, so I have a long history with them. I also get to enjoy our cowboy Josh’s dogs; he has a couple of good rescue dogs who sometimes wander down to my porch to hang with my canine crew.”
Even after moving into a smaller home on their estate in December 2021, the Drummonds ensured that their furry friends remained a central part of their lives. “They set up shop on the front porch. They each have their own little bed on the front porch,” Ree explained to People in May 2022. “They’re outdoor dogs mostly anyway, and they have a whole barn to themselves if they want to go sleep in the barn sometimes, but they hardly ever leave the porch if we’re home. It’s really funny.”
