Long before she became a household name in country music, Wynonna Judd started life with a different name. Born Christina Claire Ciminella in Kentucky, she decided to reinvent herself just as she was about to step into the spotlight with her mother, Naomi Judd. A Young Girl with Big Dreams
Wynonna, now 59, has always had a deep connection to music. In a recent episode of Southern Living’s “Biscuits and Jam” podcast, she shared her early passion for the guitar. “I picked up my first guitar when I was just 8 years old,” she reminisced. “In my family, I was known as the girl who always had a guitar with her. No matter where I went, that guitar was right there with me. I was so convinced that I was going to make it big in the music world. At the tender age of 12, I decided to change my name to Wynonna.”
She continued, “I was born Christina, but I knew deep down that I needed a new name to match my new journey. It wasn’t just about changing my name for showbiz—it was about embracing who I truly wanted to be. I wanted a name that resonated with the music I loved and the person I aspired to become.”

The Inspiration Behind 'Wynonna'
Wynonna’s name change wasn’t arbitrary. It came from a classic song that had always stuck with her. “The name Wynonna came from the song ‘Route 66,’” she explained. “There’s a line in the song that says, ‘Flagstaff, Arizona, don’t forget Winona.’ I just loved the sound of it, and I thought, why not make it my own? People might think I changed my name for professional reasons, but it was so much more personal than that.”
Her birth name, Christina Claire Ciminella, was beautiful in its own right, but Wynonna felt it didn’t fully capture her spirit. She wanted a name that would reflect her love for music and the adventures she envisioned for herself.
Naomi’s Journey to Becoming Naomi
Wynonna’s mother, Naomi Judd, also had a transformative journey when it came to her name. Born Diana Ellen Judd, she felt her birth name didn’t align with her identity. “She wanted a name that reflected her spiritual and rural Kentucky roots,” Wynonna shared. “She drew inspiration from the Bible and chose the name Naomi because it resonated with her deeply.”
The mother-daughter duo, known as The Judds, stormed the country music scene in the early ‘80s. They became legends in their own right, touching countless lives with their harmonies and heartfelt lyrics. However, tragedy struck when Naomi passed away just days before they were set to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Her death was a devastating blow that Wynonna is still processing.
Dealing with Grief and Finding Strength
Since her mother’s passing, Wynonna has been open about the emotional challenges she’s faced. “Losing my mom was one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through,” she admitted. “But in a strange way, it’s brought me closer to my fans. I’ve never felt more connected to them. Being an orphan means realizing that you’re alone in the world without your parents, but at the same time, I’ve found so much support from strangers who have reached out to me. People from all walks of life tell me, ‘I may not listen to country music, but I know your story, and I see you. I appreciate you.’”
With the help of her fans and loved ones, Wynonna has found strength during this difficult time. As the holidays approach, she’s looking forward to celebrating Christmas with her husband, Cactus Moser, their blended family, and her granddaughter, Kaliyah. “I’m going to take her out into the woods and do all the wild, quirky things my mom used to do,” Wynonna said with a smile. “She taught my son how to do things like poop in the woods—she was such a character! I want to be remembered for doing the fun, unexpected things that maybe her mom wouldn’t have allowed.”
