When Netflix's The Crown hit the screens, it was a major event. But not everyone was thrilled with the way the royal family was portrayed. Princess Kate Middleton’s uncle, Gary Goldsmith, recently voiced his strong opinions about the show's depiction of his sister, Carole Middleton, and niece, Kate.

Gary Goldsmith Opens Up About The Crown

Gary, who is 58, shared his thoughts during an episode of The Daily Mail’s “The Crown: Fact or Fiction” podcast on January 11. He admitted that he enjoyed the first few episodes of the series, but as the show progressed, it began to feel less like history and more like fantasy.

“I was really into the first couple of episodes and the first series of The Crown. It was captivating,” Gary explained. “But then, as it went on, it started to drift into this fantasy world. There are so many parts of it that just don’t align with reality.”

Gary went on to describe how the show became increasingly difficult to watch due to its unrealistic portrayal of events. “It got ridiculous and fantastical, which made it hard to keep watching,” he confessed. “People from all over the world are tuning in, and they’re believing this is the truth. But honestly, it feels like watching a soap opera instead of a historical drama.”

He added, “Sometimes I find myself wondering, 'Am I watching The Crown or Coronation Street? It’s just not accurate. A lot of it is made up.”

Season 6: Kate and Carole’s Storyline

In Season 6 of The Crown, actress Meg Bellamy played Kate Middleton, while Eve Best portrayed Carole Middleton. This season focused on the love story between Kate, who was 42 at the time, and her now-husband, Prince William, as they both attended St. Andrews University in Scotland.

The show depicted a pivotal moment when Kate was initially planning to attend Edinburgh University with her friends. However, her mother, Carole, suggested she switch to St. Andrews after taking a gap year. Later, Kate confronts Carole about her suspicions that her mother was trying to steer her toward Prince William.

In the series, Kate tells Carole, “I was all set to go to Edinburgh University right out of school with all my friends. Then you suggested I change it to St. Andrews after a gap year. Without any of my friends. That was no coincidence… Was it a coincidence that you encouraged me to sign up for the art school in Florence where William was expected to go? And then to the expedition in Chile as well. Where he went… Once you had the idea fixed in your head, you never stopped.”

In another scene, Carole advises her daughter, “You want to show off those legs,” in an effort to grab Prince William’s attention. Kate and William were married in a royal wedding in April 2011 and have three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

When discussing the show’s portrayal of his family, Gary was passionate in his defense. “First and foremost, Kate did an incredible job to get into St. Andrews,” he emphasized. “She’s an amazing girl, but that wasn’t acknowledged in the series. It was all about 'Kate, you’ve got to be here on this day, wearing these clothes, doing these things, showing your legs.' That’s just not who we are. It’s not how Carole operates.”

He continued, “Our family is grounded in reality, not in some made-up drama. Carole isn’t some evil mastermind sitting in a dungeon, scheming ways to force her way into the royal family. She’s strong-willed and opinionated, but that’s what makes her the incredible woman she is. She’s the reason we have the kids and family we have today.”

The Middleton Family’s Stance on The Crown

When asked if the rest of the Middleton family has watched The Crown, Gary was candid. “I think the family is too classy to waste time with stuff like that,” he admitted. “But, I’m sure there’s someone taking notes, jotting down things like, ‘They said this.’”

He added, “I don’t understand why Carole hasn’t taken legal action because it’s that bad. Carole isn’t manipulative or evil. She’s not the villain they’ve made her out to be. She’s a strong, determined woman who’s done an amazing job raising her kids.”
