In his revealing October 2023 memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, John Stamos has set the gossip world ablaze with some pretty bold claims about his marriage to his former wife, Rebecca Romijn. The X-Men star was left absolutely floored by the revelations in the book.
Rebecca, now 51, opened up on the Critics Choice Awards red carpet on January 14, speaking to Entertainment Tonight about her reaction to John's memoir. "I was incredibly shocked by all of that," she admitted. "It really came out of nowhere for me. I was blindsided. But honestly, I don’t want to do anything that helps him sell more books based on those headlines. That’s really all I care to say about it," she added with a mix of calmness and firmness.
John Stamos Opens Up About His Failed Marriage
Rebecca and John were married from 1998 to 2005, and in his book, the Full House star delves into what he believes were the underlying issues that caused their marriage to unravel. He claims that Rebecca was "immersed in her career and building new friendships," which created a series of challenges for their relationship.

John’s memoir isn’t shy about painting a vivid picture of their marriage’s demise. "She smiles at me a little less, doesn’t look me in the eyes over dinner, takes phone calls in the other room," he writes. "Betrayal starts as a sinking feeling in your stomach, grows into a suspicion that clouds your every thought, and by the time you find out the truth, it’s uniquely horrible at first but also expected, like you’ve been waiting for something bad to happen. There’s nothing more to say. There’s a point of no return, and what felt like a phase is now her phasing me out for good," he poignantly describes.
Moreover, John asserts that "something cruel and calculating" was at play in their breakup, further fueling the drama.

John Stamos Reflects on His Darkest Hours
John continues his introspective narrative, expressing the turmoil he endured during the low points of their marriage. "In the darkest hour, the schmuck who proposed, the clown who’d do anything to make her laugh and the husband planning for the future all sit up torturing me with 'what-ifs,'" he writes. He adds, "The guy who promised her and himself 'forever,' just like in the Beach Boys song, now sees that forever might not last the night." This candid reflection reveals the depth of his emotional struggle during their separation.
Life After the Split
After parting ways with John, Rebecca found love again and married Jerry O’Connell in 2007. The couple now shares the joy of raising twins, Dolly and Charlie. Meanwhile, John went on to marry his current wife, Caitlin McHugh, in 2018. The same year, they welcomed their son, Billy, adding new chapters to their respective lives.
Despite addressing the memoir briefly, Rebecca confessed during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show in November 2023 that she had no intention of reading John’s book. "There was an initial curiosity in my household," she said, "but after listening to his interview on The Howard Stern Show, any interest I had in reading the book disappeared."
