James Pickens Jr. on Career Highlights and Secret to His Marriage

As the snow begins to fall this winter, James Pickens Jr. is set to return to the world of Grey’s Anatomy for its 20th season. Fans can expect a spring premiere, continuing the medical drama that's captivated audiences for years. James, who’s been playing Dr. Richard "Chief" Webber since 2005, alongside Ellen Pompeo and Chandra Wilson, is one of the last original cast members. “It’s been a heck of a ride,” says James, 69, in a candid chat with Closer. “We’ve had a great time, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.”

James’s career extends far beyond Grey’s Anatomy. He's brought unforgettable characters to life in shows like The X-Files and Roseanne, but his heart remains with theater, his first love. Beyond the spotlight, James is a passionate advocate for prostate cancer awareness, serving as a celebrity ambassador. When he’s not on set or stage, you’ll find him enjoying the great outdoors, horseback riding, and roping cattle on his ranch. “It’s a great escape,” he shares. “There’s something about riding the trails that clears your mind and recharges your soul. It’s pure fun.”

Did Acting Always Call to You?

“Not at all,” James reflects. “I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, as the oldest of three kids. My dad worked in the steel mill for over 20 years, and he instilled in us the value of hard work. I always dreamed of being an artist and illustrator, but things changed when I went to college. That’s where I caught the acting bug. I found myself in New York City in the late '70s, pursuing theater mostly in off-Broadway productions. By 1990, I made my way to Los Angeles, and I can’t believe how long I’ve been here. It feels like just the beginning.”

“They were supportive, but let’s face it, for that generation, acting wasn’t exactly a familiar career path. To them, work meant an eight-hour day, five days a week. Their reference points were Sidney Poitier, Diahann Carroll, and Harry Belafonte. Acting as a career? It was foreign territory for them. But they were always proud of me, and that meant the world.”

What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Self?

“I’d tell my younger self to trust the journey. I’m proud of where I ended up, and I never gave up. Once I realized this was my path, I stayed true to it. No regrets. Everything happens for a reason, and I’ve learned to embrace it all.”

Is Theater Still Your True Love?

“Absolutely. Theater will always hold a special place in my heart. I just wrapped up a play at the New Jersey Repertory Company, and it reminded me how much I missed the stage. They say theater is like riding a bike—you never forget how to do it. It’s a magical experience every time.”

What Was It Like Performing in ‘A Tailor Near Me’?

“Performing in A Tailor Near Me alongside Richard Kind was an incredible experience. The theater was small, but every night was sold out. It was amazing to help a small theater survive during these tough times. COVID hit the regional theater community hard, and many smaller houses couldn’t afford to stay open. I hope more people will join us in supporting these vital cultural institutions.”

Have You Ever Been Starstruck by Co-stars?

“I’ve never worked with him, but if there’s one person who made me starstruck, it’s Sidney Poitier. He’s such a gentleman, with so much wisdom and grace. I’ll never forget his warm hugs and those sly smiles he’d give me.”

Who Are Some of Your Favorite Collaborators?

“Working with Anthony Hopkins on Nixon was a dream come true. He’s an absolute genius. I also shared the stage with Hal Holbrook, Samuel Jackson, and Denzel Washington. We did a show called A Soldier’s Play early in our careers, and it was a game-changer. We became great friends, and our kids have grown up together. It’s a beautiful circle of life.”

“Prostate cancer awareness is close to my heart. My father and several of his brothers were diagnosed with it. I get tested annually, and I encourage others, especially African American men, to do the same. We’re 50% more likely to be diagnosed, so we need to overcome the fear and mistrust. Early detection saves lives.” (For more information, visit movember.com.)

What’s the Secret to a Successful Marriage?

“My wife Gina and I have been together for 39 years, and the secret? Communication and mutual respect. You have to navigate life together, knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Gina is my best friend, and I’m truly blessed to have her by my side. Date nights are simple—good food, a movie, or catching a live music show. Life’s about balance and joy.”

Your Love for Roping and Trail Riding

“I grew up watching westerns on TV, and when I had the chance to dive deeper into that world, I jumped right in. I own three horses now, and they’re my favorite companions. I’ve even tried my hand at rodeo events. The western lifestyle has always fascinated me, and it’s a big part of who I am today.”

Do You Have a Daily Motto?

“Every morning, I read a Bible verse to set the tone for the day. One of my favorites is, ‘This is the day the Lord has made, and we will rejoice and be glad in it.’ I also make my bed first thing in the morning. It’s a small accomplishment, but it sets the tone for the rest of the day. It’s amazing how something so simple can make such a big difference.”
