"She spent much of her life searching for someone who could fill the void left by him," Banner explains. But there was more to her story. As a four-time Oscar nominee, Greta made her final film in 1941 before relocating to New York City. There, she lived a rich, fulfilling life, mingling with the city's elite. "Photographers followed her until her death in 1990," Banner says. "She walked the streets of New York with friends, insisting not on solitude but on being left alone—a subtle yet significant distinction."
