Here’s the story of Steve Martin, a man who went from feeling disconnected from the world to becoming the loving father of a beautiful daughter. The star of Only Murders in the Building recently opened up about his transformation into a family man in his new Apple TV+ documentary, STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces. This isn’t just about a man finding love late in life; it’s about discovering the profound joy of fatherhood and the unexpected twists life can bring.

Family Wasn’t Always on Steve’s Radar

For Steve Martin, family life wasn’t something he actively sought out. Speaking candidly, the 78-year-old comedian and actor admitted, “Well, family was never really a goal for me. Growing up, I wasn’t shown that it was something magical or fantastic. It’s almost like I missed the memo that most people seem to get. I’m not sure I’m saying this right, but it just wasn’t something I thought about much. I was more focused on my career and the path I was on.”

Marriage with Victoria Tennant: A Relationship That Didn’t Stick

Steve’s first marriage to Victoria Tennant began in 1986. The two even starred together in All of Me and L.A. Story, but their relationship didn’t last. By 1994, the couple parted ways. Reflecting on that time, Steve shared, “When I married Victoria, I really liked her. She was funny, charming, intelligent, and had this great English vibe. It was one of those relationships that just sort of happened naturally. I guess part of me thought, ‘Well, maybe I should get married.’ Looking back, that’s not a great reason to tie the knot. You can’t force something like that.”

Steve also revealed that his demanding career schedule made it difficult to sustain a healthy marriage. “Being away for months at a time, living in hotels while filming movies—it’s almost like living the bachelor life. It’s hard to maintain a marriage when you’re essentially living out of a suitcase. I always felt like, with every romantic relationship, something was bound to go wrong. It was almost like I was waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

A New Chapter with Anne Stringfield

After his divorce, Steve admitted he felt lost. But then, in 2007, he met Anne Stringfield, and his life began to change. The couple married, and in 2012, when Steve was 67, they welcomed their daughter. “The first time I truly understood what love was came after our baby was born,” Steve recalled. “I looked over at Anne, and there she was, holding our baby. Her eyes were locked on our daughter’s face, and in that moment, it was like nothing else in the world mattered. It was pure, unadulterated love.”

    Choosing Privacy for His Daughter

Since becoming a father, Steve has made a conscious decision to keep his daughter’s life private. In the documentary, she remains unseen, and her full name isn’t revealed. Steve explains, “I hate the idea of putting my family’s life on display. There’s so much joy in family life, and I don’t want to compromise that in any way. I think people get it; they understand that you don’t want to show your kids on camera. It’s about protecting what’s most important.”
